Tiger Woods rumors swirl over long-awaited return after tournament announcement
Tiger Woods could make a comeback at the Hero World Challenge

Tiger Woods hasn’t played a competitive round since the 2024 Open Championship, but speculation is rife about a return at the Hero World Challenge, with three field exemptions yet to be announced.

Woods teased a hopeful Masters return in 2026, after the 15-time major winner had teed off in TGL following an October back surgery. But, it quickly went downhill after he flipped his car and was arrested for a DUI just days after his missed putt in the TGL finals.

After a rehab stint, he's been seen out in public more recently, with the 50-year-old showing off his skills at Monterey Peninsula Country Club last week Woods was seen hitting golf balls on the driving range at the clinic where he showed off to fans beyond the ropes.

Thanks to the showing, fans are hopeful that one of the exemption spots in the tournament, which he hosts, will go to Woods even after he announced he was taking a step back from the game at the time of the car crash in March.

“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” Woods said. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.”

Woods left the country for a brief moment to recover, and he was found with opioids in his pocket at the time of the crash.

“I’m committed to taking the time needed to return to a healthier, stronger and more focused place, both personally and professionally,” he continued. “I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.”

The Hero World Challenge field is currently set at just 17 people, while the three exemptions will be announced at a later date. It includes World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Players Championship winner Cameron Young, European star Matt Fitzpatrick, and fan-favorite Justin Thomas.

Having claimed victory at the event five times, Woods has frequently been present to personally hand over the trophy to the champion, and last years tournament winner Hideki Matsuyama said that he’s always looked up to the legendary golfer.

“Tiger is my idol,” said Matsuyama following the 2025 win.

“Nine years ago (when I first won the Hero World Challenge) was the first time I was able to take pictures with Tiger and I want to take pictures with Tiger more. That’s why I play well at Tiger’s events.”
