Vitor Pereira reveals lofty 'next objective' after Nottingham Forest exit

Vitor Pereira has saved Wolves and Nottingham Forest from relegation in the last two seasons

Nottingham Forest head coach Vitor Pereira

Former Nottingham Forest boss Vitor Pereira wants to return to the Premier League – to win it.

The Portuguese coach spent four months at the City Ground last season and made sure a chaotic campaign didn’t end in relegation.

Pereira arrived Trentside with the club one place and three points above the drop zone. He left at the end of the season having steered the Reds to 16th and five points ahead of West Ham.

Overall he won eight and drew six of his 20 matches and also helped the club reach the semi-finals of the Europa League.

The 58-year-old actually started last term in charge of Wolves, having also masterminded their safety the previous campaign, but lost his job in November.

He is now looking for his next challenge and wants to return to England – but not for another relegation battle.

“I want to reach a level where I can compete for titles in the Premier League,” he said on the 90+3* video podcast, broadcast on A BOLA TV, via Sport Witness.

“Throughout my career, I’ve set goals for myself. I wanted to become a coach, and I did, I wanted to reach the top flight, and I did.

“I wanted to become a national champion, and I did. Then I wanted to win titles abroad, and I did. I wanted to reach the Premier League, and I did. My next objective is to reach a competitive level that allows me to fight for titles in the Premier League.”

Pereira was asked about the Champions League and replied: “First, I need to have the opportunity to reach that level. You don’t win the Champions League while managing Wolverhampton - with all due respect to them.

“But keeping Wolverhampton up that year was, in a sense, like winning the Champions League.”

Forest replaced him with Oliver Glasner, fresh off the Austrian’s trophy-winning exit from Crystal Palace. The Reds are currently 18th, with just one win so far this term.
