Gunther’s recent WWE run has raised questions about where the former World Heavyweight Champion is headed next.

According to a new report, his presentation on SmackDown has prompted concern behind the scenes, particularly given the momentum he built through several high-profile victories earlier.

The Ring General has developed a reputation for ending legendary careers, but his latest appearances have left questions about how WWE plans to use him going forward.

The reported uncertainty comes as Gunther has made his ambitions in the championship picture clear.

New report examines uncertainty surrounding Gunther’s creative direction in WWE

WrestleVotes Radio, via Fightful Select, reported that sources have described a mild sense of frustration and confusion surrounding Gunther’s recent use on SmackDown. The report added that people within WWE’s creative team have questioned his current direction, considering the path his career had taken before moving to the blue brand.

Gunther’s recent achievements include retiring Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles. Those victories strengthened his standing as one of WWE’s most dominant performers, making his subsequent presentation a point of discussion.

His recent storyline has involved Finn Balor and Danhausen, including an attack on both men on SmackDown. Gunther later appeared on Main Event, where he made it clear that he wanted another opportunity at championship gold, setting his sights on Sami Zayn’s Undisputed WWE Championship.

That appearance also drew criticism from some fans, who questioned why a star with Gunther’s recent accomplishments was appearing on Main Event.

A potential title pursuit could provide Gunther with a clearer path, but his immediate priorities remain uncertain amid the ongoing story involving Balor and Danhausen. Zayn also faces other potential challengers, meaning a championship opportunity is far from guaranteed.

For now, the report outlines questions about how WWE will build on Gunther’s momentum rather than shift plans revolving around him. The Ring General may be ready to fight his way back into the title picture, but WWE’s next move will determine whether his story regains its former force.
