Kane felt he was never going to score in ‘strange’ Klassiker draw
Kane felt he was never going to score in ‘strange’ Klassiker draw

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane felt he could have played all night and still would not have found the net on a "strange night" against Borussia Dortmund.

The first Klassiker of the season finished 2-2 on Saturday as Fabio Silva's 89th-minute goal rescued a point for Dortmund at the Allianz Stadium.

It was the second time BVB had to come from behind, with Konrad Laimer and Dayot Upamecano on target for Bayern either side of Serhou Guirassy's first equaliser.

But another key moment centred upon Ballon d'Or winner Kane, who smashed a 56th-minute penalty against the crossbar when Bayern were 1-0 up.

It was just his second unsuccessful spot-kick in 27 attempts in the Bundesliga, and on a night to forget, the world's best player failed to hit the target from six shots with an expected goals (xG) value of 0.98.

His six shots without hitting the target once were the second-most of any player in the Bundesliga this campaign, after Hoffenheim's Fisnik Asllani had seven shots off target against Werder Bremen earlier in the day.

Though he could not hide his disappointment, the England striker said afterwards that it was just one of those days.

"It probably wasn't my best performance or the team's best performance, but that's just life. It's part of being a striker and a footballer," Kane said, as quoted by Bulinews.

"I could have been out there for another hour, and the ball wouldn't have hit the back of the net!

"You have to take that on the chin sometimes. It was a strange night all round."

Kane did provide the assist for Upamecano's goal, taking him to eight in 13 appearances in all competitions this season, already one more than he had in 51 games last season.

Only Lamine Yamal (11) has provided more assists than Kane among players in Europe's top five leagues across this season.

While Bayern and Dortmund remain level on 18 points at the top of the table, having both gone unbeaten through the first eight matchdays, midfielder Joshua Kimmich felt the hosts did enough to win the game.

"I think this was our third draw, and it didn't need to end like that," Kimmich said.

"Especially when you see the game in the second half, I don't think a draw is justified, but that's sometimes the case in football.

"Dortmund didn't give up and were in it until the end. At the end of the day, we need to take the point, even though we obviously should've won."

Bayern, who were again managed by Aaron Danks with Vincent Kompany recovering from his recent collapse, face a daunting trip to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, before taking on Mainz on Saturday.
