Former Ohio State offensive lineman Josh Simmons was asked to leave a Kansas City Chiefs team meeting by quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid, according to NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.
"There are a lot of questions about Josh Simmons, who is as talented as a left tackle as you can possibly get," Rappaport said. "He is a stud as a player. I don't know if he plays for the Chiefs again. I don't know when he plays for the Chiefs again."
Those comments aired on ESPN's "Big Day with Peter Schrager," Oct. 27.
Per the initial report, published on Oct. 25, Simmons was sitting with his feet up in the offense's meeting room when Reid asked Simmons to put his feet down. Simmons pushed back, saying he had to sit that way due to back and hip pain, so Reid told Simmons to leave and get treatment, which Mahomes echoed.
Simmons apologized to Reid and team leadership later in the day, telling them he could've handled the situation better, according to the report.
Simmons has yet to play for the Chiefs this season due to a bulging disc in his back. He returned to practice during the Chiefs' Week 5 off week, but missed practice on Oct. 25, with the Chiefs listing his absence as "back/not injury related-personal." According to the report, the incident in the meeting room occurred that same day.
The Chiefs placed Simmons on injured reserve on Oct. 26. The earliest he can return is Week 11 of the NFL season.
The Chiefs selected Simmons with the 32nd overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. He played in eight games his rookie year. After missing a chunk of games due to family/personal reasons, Simmons then dislocated and fractured his wrist against the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving. He underwent surgery and missed the rest of the season.
Simmons transferred to the Buckeyes after his sophomore year with San Diego State. Before Ohio State won the national championship during Simmons' senior year, he tore his patellar tendon when the Buckeyes lost to Oregon on Oct. 12, 2024.
