Bills S Sam Franklin’s suspension for spitting is reduced to a fine after appeal

Bills safety Sam Franklin’s appeal of his one-game suspension for spitting at a member of the Raiders in Week 6 was successful.

The NFL announced that Franklin’s suspension was reduced to a fine of $14,926 for unsportsmanlike conduct. The appeal was heard by hearing officer James Thrash, who was jointly appointed by the league and the NFL Players Association.

Franklin was accused of spitting at a Raiders player after Las Vegas kicked an extra point with 1:32 left in Buffalo’s 33-30 win. Franklin denied the allegation and announced immediate plans to appeal the penalty.

While Franklin is now set to play when the Bills return from their bye in Week 8, they will be without safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Gardner-Johnson’s one-game ban for spitting at a Raiders player was upheld on appeal.
