Lachie Manzelmann (inset) trains all the runners in one race
A trainer is guaranteed success in a race on Friday because all 11 runners are from his stable.
The sixth race at Mackay, in Queensland, Australia, an open handicap worth £10,000 over six and a half furlongs, has produced a one-sided line-up. Lachie Manzelmann, who has trained 20 winners during the season out of a career total of 118, declared 11 horses in the race and when the field was published he found no one else was prepared to take him on.
"It's not very often you go to the races knowing you are going to win," Manzelmann told Racenet.com.
"You often think you can win. But at least I know I will win on Friday. If I get beaten in this race, there is something wrong."
The situation is not unique to Queensland as already this week another trainer Tanya Parry trained all the horses in two six runner races at Mount Isa.
Manzelmann acknowledged that Friday’s race is unlikely to be an attractive betting opportunity for punters.
Lachie Manzelmann: guaranteed a winner
"In complete honesty, I think it's terrible for racing," he said. "It probably also doesn't help wagering turnover.
"But there is no reason why anyone else couldn't have gone in this race on Friday, it's an Open race and any horse is eligible for that.
"I find it really strange, an Open Handicap couldn't get a single other nomination. We didn't stop anyone else from nominating and there's no limit on what can be nominated.
"They even extended nominations and no-one took up that opportunity either."
