Former Hull FC Challenge Cup winner appointed to Championship coaching role

Former Hull FC fan favourite Richard Whiting, a member of the club’s 2005 Challenge Cup-winning side, has joined Goole Vikings as an assistant coach for the 2027 season.

Whiting will link up with newly-appointed head coach Brett Ferres, who was taken over from the departing Scott Taylor, who himself has returned to Hull FC.

A former England international, Whiting brings plenty of experience from his playing career but he’s also held off-field roles with Toronto Wolfpack and York Valkyrie, with this appointment set to see him lead the club’s technical coaching programme.

Confirming his appointment, Goole Vikings said: “The Vikings have further strengthened their coaching team ahead of the Championship season with the appointment of former England international and Challenge Cup winner Richard Whiting as assistant coach.”

Whiting hung up his boots in 2018 after a career that saw him make over 330 professional appearances, 257 of which came for Hull FC where he won the Challenge Cup in 2005 and played in their 2006 Super League Grand Final appearance.

A three-time England international, Whiting will bring plenty of experience to the Vikings in support of first-time head coach Brett Ferres.

Goole Vikings appoint former Hull FC man

Whiting, 41, revealed that he’s been keen to take on a role at the club since last December, citing conversations with former Hull FC chief executive James Clark as a key reason he has joined the Vikings.

He said: “Ever since speaking to James Clark last December, I’ve known I wanted to be involved with the club in some capacity.

“I’ve known James for a very long time and have a lot of trust in him. I didn’t have to think twice about the opportunity because of that relationship, and I can’t wait to work together again.”

Speaking on working with Ferres, Whiting said: “I’ve also known Brett for a very long time. Our careers followed a similar path, from Yorkshire Under-18s through to competing against each other in Super League.

“Having spoken with him, it’s clear we share a very similar vision of how we want a team to play and what that should look like. I’m really looking forward to working alongside him.

“The squad Brett and James have assembled is really promising. There are some very good, hungry young players coming in to complement the more experienced members of the group.”
