Kimi Antonelli is on the brink of winning the Formula 1 world championship following his United States Grand Prix win on Sunday. The 20-year-old can become the youngest-ever recipient of the title as long as he finishes above ninth at the Mexico GP next weekend. He could also be crowned champion if either George Russell or Lewis Hamilton fail to win the race. This would mean that Antonelli would be the champ, no matter where he finishes.

Discussing his impressive drive in Texas, the Mercedes prodigy said: "It was the result we needed. All this time putting work on the new package and finally seeing the result was very pleasant, perfect strategy to call the one-stop.

"I know we are very close. We try to finish on a high and hopefully we can clinch it very soon."

The champion-in-waiting may consider making a shock decision, thanks to his 123-point lead at the top. Here, Express Sport has the latest headlines coming out of the F1 paddock.

Kimi Antonelli 'tipped to skip Brazil'

Antonelli didn't shut down the prospect of missing the Brazil Grand Prix due to overexuberant celebrations after winning the F1 title. Following the US Grand Prix, the Mercedes star was joined by Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen - who finished second and third respectively - in the cooldown room.

During the behind-the-scenes view that Sky Sports cameras were capturing, Lelcerc said: "So, probably Mexico then?" Verstappen shouted: "Tequila!" The Ferrari driver added: "For Brazil, you won't arrive in the best shape."

Verstappen joked "Kimi misses the Sao Paulo Grand Prix!" as the three laughed together. While Antonelli didn't confirm he would stand down from future races, the 20-year-old could enjoy his celebrations in style without worrying about any more driving.

Big moments. Packed grandstands. A championship battle that's heating up.

When the Formula 1 season delivers like this, watching from home just isn't the same as being there when the lights go out.

George Russell discusses sabotage

Russell jokingly claimed he would sabotage his Mercedes team-mate by getting him jailed in the US. Speaking before Antonelli took victory on Sunday night, the Brit joked that he could beat the 20-year-old to the F1 crown by reporting him for underage drinking on the podium.

Antonelli hasn't quite hit the legal age for drinking - 21 - in the United States. Referencing the potential law break, Russell said: "Actually this could be a good way I can try and beat you in the championship. I can get you arrested on Sunday night and then..." before the pair laughed it off.

The 28-year-old is sitting 123 points behind his Mercedes partner in the championship standings. The only way Russell makes it to the crown is if he wins all the remaining races and Antonelli does not score a single point.

You can watch the Mexico Grand Prix from 8pm on Sunday, November 1, on Sky Sports.
