NEED TO KNOW

  • The Spurs and the Thunder were involved in a fight on Tuesday night

  • Four players received technicals in the fracas

  • Spurs star Victor Wembanyama struggled in the game and finished with 12 points

The San Antonio Spurs and the Oklahoma City Thunder picked up where they left off on opening night!

After the Spurs’ De’Aaron Fox was hit with a technical for pushing OKC’s Chet Holmgren to the ground midway through the second quarter in San Antonio on Tuesday, Oct. 20, members from both teams chose violence.

Spurs star Victor Wembanyama and the Thunder’s Jaylin Williams went after it, both earning technicals, and two more Oklahoma City players also named Williams (Jalen and Kenrich) received techs.

The teams battled to seven games in last year’s Western Conference Finals — and the loser (OKC) seemingly took the season-opener personally, cruising to a 116-104 win at Frost Bank Center.

Led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who had 32 points in 36 minutes, the Thunder looked sharp.

Wembanyama, however, appeared to have an NBA Finals hangover, nearly making league history with an initial 0-for-12 shooting night. (Pistons player Stanley Johnson holds the shot clock-era record for a game in which he went 0-for-13 in 2017.)

The French phenom’s first basket from the field didn’t happen until a buzzer-beater in the 3rd, and he finished with 12 points.

Afterwards, Wemby, 22, analyzed the frustrating night and stated his game lacked “fun.”

“I need to go back to playing the basketball I like, this is not the sport I like right here,” he told reporters. “I’ve got no reason to be hesitant, no reason to not be myself. It’s, for me, as simple as that. I’m good when I have fun.”

He added, “I missed lots of shots, which I usually don’t miss. But after that it was, I didn’t go back to these shots and I didn’t, I was indecisive. I might be overthinking it. I feel like it’s a chance for me to, what I have to do is really let go.”
