Tony Finau’s frustrating 2026 PGA Tour season continued in Mexico last week as he missed his ninth cut of the year.
The six-time PGA Tour winner has been free-falling down the world rankings for a while now and it’s clear to see that his issues will not be fixed overnight.
He has obviously experienced problems with his putting, but his driving and approach play has been equally as poor as his form on the greens this season.
Tony Finau was one of the best golfers in the world not too long ago, but now he isn’t even automatically exempt for the major championships.
No, pitch and putt does not count!
Finau has missed three of his last four PGA Tour cuts, including in his hometown event at the Bank of Utah Championship.
He seems to be completely lost with his game, and he has been an absolute shadow of his former self for quite some time now.
Finau may well now be looking back to 2023 when he was offered the chance to join LIV Golf and wondering whether he made a very big mistake by turning them down.
It was claimed back in December 2023 that Finau was in talks with LIV Golf about joining the league. At the time, he was a top 20 player in the world and had genuine leverage.
In the end, Finau decided to reject LIV’s offer, believed to be in the region of $70 million (Golf Monthly). Three years later, things have completely changed for him now.
The 37-year-old from Salt Lake City, Utah, has fallen to 174th in the world rankings and he has just two top 10 finishes to his name on the PGA Tour since July 2024. The fact that he has missed nine cuts this year in 26 starts tell us all we need to know about his form.
It’s clear to see that Finau has completely lost all confidence in his ability and the harder he works on his game, the more he seems to struggle.
Numerous players undoubtedly made huge mistakes by joining LIV Golf. The likes of Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Cam Smith and Jon Rahm have all wasted three or four years of their golfing lives while they were in their absolute primes.
The vast majority of big-name golfers have regressed as players since joining LIV Golf, and that’s not surprising, given the amount of money they received. It must be difficult to practice and work hard on your game every single day when you’ve been given money that secures your family’s financial future for many generations to come.
However, that works both ways. There are players who perhaps made the wrong decision by rejecting moves to LIV. Tony Finau is definitely one of them. Perhaps Will Zalatoris is as well.
