Rod Walker: Saints’ 18 rushing yards another low point for Kellen Moore

Here’s what I want you to do.

As you begin reading this column, start walking.

Are you walking yet?

OK.

Good.

By the time you finish reading this sentence and the next one, there is a good chance that you would have walked 18 yards. That’s how many yards the New Orleans Saints rushed for in 60 minutes of football in Sunday’s discouraging 16-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers at Stade de France in Paris.

No, that’s not a typo.

EIGHTEEN YARDS.

You went farther than that this morning when you went to grab your newspaper out of the driveway or went to the break room for a cup of coffee.

Yet that was all the Saints were able to muster on the ground Sunday.

Meanwhile, the defense gave up 148 yards rushing. Most of that was by Steelers’ running back Jaylen Warren, who could have got more than that if the Steelers fed him more. Warren averaged 5.6 yards per carry. The Saints averaged 1.1 yards per carry.

If you’re looking for the perfect recipe to lose a football game, the Saints gave you the two main ingredients Sunday. An inability to run. And an inability to stop the run, even if it’s a 42-year old Steelers quarterback scrambling for a first down on third-and-6 to put the game away.

The Saints’ terrible running game gave Steelers fans plenty reasons to wave their Terrible Towels. This performance may not have been as embarrassing as New Orleans’ loss to the Atlanta Falcons three weeks ago, but the 18 yards is in the conversation.

If you’re a Saints fan, it was hard to watch your team regress like that after rushing for 175 yards the week before in a victory over the Giants. The Saints reverted back to who they have been most of the season: one of the worst rushing teams in the league.

After Sunday’s slate of games, there were 46 players who rushed for more than 18 yards this week. Six of those players were quarterbacks.

If those numbers disgust you and you’re looking for a silver lining, all I have to offer is this.

The Saints have a bye this week, so you won’t be disappointed next Sunday.

Kellen Moore now has an extra week to try to fix something the Saints thought they were fixing in the offseason.

They signed running back Travis Etienne in free agency in March.

Two days before that, they signed guard David Edwards to help pave the way up front for guys like Etienne, Alvin Kamara and Kendre Miller. But Etienne went on the injured reserve list after a hamstring injury Sept. 27 against the Las Vegas Raiders and hasn’t been able to help.

So for the next two weeks, this has to be priority No. 1 for Moore.

“We have to put work in that,” Moore said. “There's too much ebbs and flows. There's weeks when it's good and weeks where it's not. We just weren't able to get any movement and create any creases and opportunities in the run game today. Seventeen (carries) for 18 (yards) and Tyler's got a couple scrambles in there. And so it wasn't good enough. We had to throw the ball a number of times, and we got to get it done.”

It’s not fair to ask Tyler Shough and his receivers to do all the heavy lifting. Moore was hired because he is an offensive-minded coach. Between the slow starts and no running game, we just haven’t seen it in his first 24 games as head coach. It’s up to him to scheme up something to get the Saints out of the NFL basement of running teams.

Seven weeks into the season, and it doesn’t seem like he has any answers.

His postgame press conference was filled with some of the same catchphrases he’s used so many times this season. Words like “opportunities” and “solutions” and “evaluations.” He used some version of those three words a total of 19 times.

That’s one more than the number of yards his team rushed for.

Simply put, that’s just not good enough.
