West Ham United have been hit with one of the most astonishing transfer rumours in modern memory, involving a player whose loyalty and importance to the club make the latest claims particularly difficult to believe.
Konstantinos Mavropanos has transformed himself from a much-maligned figure into a genuine West Ham hero, earning the Hammer of the Year award and the Championship Player of the Month accolade after an outstanding start to the campaign.
The Greek international could easily have walked away following West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League last season. Instead, he showed his loyalty by staying, making clear that he and his teammates had a responsibility to get the club back where it belongs.
That has not stopped the transfer speculation, though, and the latest claim is certainly one to raise eyebrows.
Over the past six months, Mavropanos has been linked with AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Olympiacos and Besiktas.
Those are all understandable destinations for a defender who has rebuilt his reputation and established himself as one of the most influential centre-backs in the Championship.
But on the eve of West Ham’s crucial promotion showdown with Swansea, another club has supposedly entered the race.
Burnley.
Yes, West Ham fans, you did read that correctly.
Football League World assistant editor Jack Price has repeated extraordinary claims from Turkish outlets A Spor and Takvim that Burnley want to sign Mavropanos and have already made an offer through his new representatives, ROOF.
The reports go further still, claiming the defender wants to leave West Ham during the January transfer window.
Given everything that has happened over the past few months, it is difficult to take that suggestion seriously without some pretty compelling evidence.
Mavropanos has just enjoyed one of the finest spells of his West Ham career, becoming a fan favourite after previously facing criticism. His commitment to the cause has never appeared stronger, and leaving the club has reportedly been far from his thinking.
He was at it again in midweek, heading home his fifth goal of the season to break the deadlock against nine-man Lincoln as West Ham ultimately secured a thumping 6-0 victory.
The timing of this latest rumour is remarkable.

Most importantly, West Ham have already responded to the growing transfer speculation surrounding the defender.
In an exclusive Hammers News story earlier this week, a leading source inside West Ham made the position regarding Mavropanos in January abundantly clear.
“He won’t be sold in January, unless it is an earth-shattering offer we can’t turn down, because full focus is on achieving promotion back to the Premier League and he is a key player,” the source exclusively told Hammers News.
That is hardly the response you would expect from a club preparing to cash in on one of their most valuable assets.
There is a more complicated picture regarding next summer, with West Ham’s position then understood to be different if they don’t get promoted back to the top flight. Mavropanos has also attracted interest from clubs abroad, and his change of representatives has naturally fuelled further speculation.
But a January departure to Burnley would be an entirely different proposition.
With all due respect to the Clarets, it is some reach to suggest they could persuade the highest-scoring defender in any major European league to abandon a promotion challenge with West Ham for a move to Championship strugglers.
West Ham are fighting to return to the Premier League, and Mavropanos has been central to that mission. His goals, defensive performances and leadership have made him one of Nuno Espirito Santo’s most valuable players.
There have been some extraordinary transfer stories involving West Ham over the years, but this one surely ranks among the most outlandish.
The claims from Turkey may generate headlines, but until there is something more substantial to support them, supporters should treat the Burnley links with considerable scepticism.
For now, West Ham have made their position clear. They are not looking to lose Mavropanos in January, and the defender’s performances, passion and words prove he does not want out.
