Exclusive negotiating rights for free agents expire on Monday at 4 p.m. Central. That’s notable because Monday is also the deadline to reinstate players from the 60-day injured list, which forces teams to clear 40-man roster spots as the offseason kicks off in earnest.
There is no 60-day injured list during the offseason, so the Minnesota Twins had a few decisions to make. It’s anyone’s guess what the offseason looks like with a lockout looming.
It could be a feeding frenzy right up until the point the owners lock up their facilities. So far, Minnesota’s moves have come on the coaching and front office levels. The Twins have hired new coaches, while longtime scouting director Deron Johnson was let go.
In response, Johnson was hired by the New York Mets, where he will now work under former Twins president, Derek Falvey. He isn’t the only one, though.
On Monday, pitcher Jack Anderson was claimed by the Mets off waivers, after the Twins tried to take him off their 40-man roster prior to Monday’s roster compliance deadline, according to Bobby Nightengale (Star Tribune).
Minnesota landed Anderson via waiver claim this summer, when the Boston Red Sox made him available. Anderson was selected out of Florida State by the Detroit Tigers on the 16th round pick of the 2021 MLB Draft/
He made his MLB debut with the Boston Red Sox this season at the age of 26. By the end of the year, he was playing in the Minnesota Twins organization. Now he’s on a his third team in just a few months.
In four games with the MN Twins this season, Anderson posted a perfect 0.00 ERA. He threw 4 1/3 innings while allowing just two hits, striking out six and walking only one. At Triple-A St. Paul, he pitched 35 1/3 innings with a 5.09 ERA. His 7.1 K/9 there was modest, and the 11.7 H/9 hurt him the most.
Anderson now joins the Mets organization. It remains to be seen how they will reshape their 40-man roster over the course of the offseason, but they liked what they saw enough to pick him up. Anderson also pitched in the World Baseball Classic last spring for Great Britain.
