Colm Courtney confident Newtownbutler can make their mark in Ulster

For, his young charges had delivered a Fermanagh JFC title in style and sent a warning to all clubs in Fermanagh that their day was coming.

Courtney was in management when Newtown endured the heartache of two successive JFC final defeats so Sunday's big win over Maguiresbridge in Lisnaskea was especially sweet.

"The heartache of the past two year is over thank God.

"There was very little in it in the past two finals.

"But I am convinced that this team would not look out of place in the Intermediate championship.

"These guys will be rattling the Intermediate championship and I also believe they can go straight up to the senior ranks."

Courtney added that there was as conveyor belt of U-16 and minors who won the double in Fermanagh this year coming through.

"There are boys on the bench and loads of young talent coming through."

Courtney saluted Diarmuid King's early two pointers and Daire Chapman's general scoring epics as key factors in their win.

"We said to Daire beforehand that if made the runs, the boys would give him the ball and he took some fabulous points.

"And Diarmuid King kicked three great two pointers and he played through the pain barrier with a cracked risk and he took injections.

"I am delighted to have this monkey off our backs and we are going to push on in Ulster now and these boys are well capable of getting a good run in Ulster and that is in a fortnight's time."

"This is a very young team and the average age of the team is around 23 which bodes very well for the future.

"Conor Casey and Ben Caughey are both U-20s but we have amazing forwards.

"The have great pace and Colum Monahan has come in this year and his training has freshened it up and there is something different every night.

"It is just great for the town."

So what does it mean to Colm who also had a son Conor playing.?

"It is huge and those forwards are fabulous and we are blessed with good back up for defence on the bench as well."

"Their skill level is top notch and they would not look out of place in the Fermanagh SFC and there is no doubt about that.

"We will enjoy Ulster, it is something we have not had in some time, but we are going to give it a good rattle."
