Rangers have found themselves under intense fire from Scottish football pundits following on-loan midfielder Lyall Cameron’s sensational performance over the weekend.
The 24-year-old midfielder was the undisputed star on the pitch during Dundee United’s 1-0 victory over Hibernian at Tannadice on Saturday (10 October), prompting an explosive debate on the STV Radio Football Show. His performance earned him a place on the SPFL Team of the Week alongside Ryan Naderi.
Having made the move across Tayside to join Jim Goodwin’s side on a season-long loan deal, Cameron’s electric form has left rival commentators questioning why Rangers were so willing to sanction a full-season exit without giving him a sustained run in the Ibrox first team.
The defender is one of the best in Scotland…
In the latest episode of the STV Radio Football Show, co-host and Dundee United fan Callum Bell kicked off the discussion by heaping relentless praise on the midfielder’s match-winning influence.
He said: “Lyall Cameron was head and shoulders above any player on that pitch. I cannot believe we’ve got him for a full season. He was exceptional.”
Ronnie Charters was even more scathing in his assessment of Cameron’s time at Ibrox, claiming that his development hit a complete brick wall in Glasgow due to a lack of regular minutes.
He said: “He’s back to that level [he used to be at Dundee FC] again because Rangers ruined him. He wasn’t playing, he didn’t get a chance to play every week.”
Ewen Cameron also addressed his sheer frustration and x-rated anger when Rangers originally secured Cameron’s signature from Dundee, adding:
“When he was at Dundee, I was raving about him. I was [expletive] at Rangers signing him because I wanted him at Hearts… I thought he was outstanding against Hibs the other day.”
After making just 10 appearances for Rangers following his arrival from Dundee last year, Cameron spent the second half of last season on loan at Aberdeen before linking up with Dundee United for the current campaign.
While his long-term future at Ibrox under Derek McInnes remains a topic of heavy debate among supporters, performances like Saturday’s masterclass against Hibernian prove that the midfielder is rapidly regaining his sharpest form.
With pundits turning up the heat over his lack of opportunities at Ibrox, decision-makers in Glasgow will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on his progress as his loan spell unfolds.
