Jaylen Brown’s 30 points and late block lift 76ers past Pistons 112-106

DETROIT (AP) — Jaylen Brown scored a season-high 30 points and made a key block in the final minute, helping the Philadelphia 76ers hold on for a 112-106 win over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night.

Joel Embiid had 26 points and 15 rebounds, and LeBron James added 13 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists as the Eastern Conference-leading Sixers improved to 8-1. Their lone loss came at home against Detroit.

Philadelphia won despite an off night from Tyrese Maxey, held to a season-low 19 points on 5-of-16 shooting. Maxey had at least 26 points in every other game this season, and his 29-point scoring average trailed just Luka Doncic and Stephen Curry in the NBA.

Cade Cunningham had 26 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds, and Duncan Robinson scored 27 for the Pistons, who lead the Central Division with a 6-2 record.

The Sixers led by 17 before Detroit rallied late, pulling within six points. With a chance to cut the deficit to three, Cunningham pulled up for a 3-pointer and Brown blocked his shot with 37 seconds left to secure the win.

James hit a left-handed runner early in the second quarter, making the NBA’s all-time leading scorer the first to connect on 16,000 shots. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the second-leading scorer in league history, made 15,837 field goals in his Hall of Fame career.

WIZARDS 120, HAWKS 105

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nickeil Alexander-Walker scored 26 points to lead Atlanta to a victory over Washington and former Hawks star guard Trae Young.

Alexander-Walker hit six 3-pointers after sinking a career-high-tying nine in a 104-102 win at Indiana on Monday.

Onyeka Okongwu added 14 points and 16 rebounds for the Hawks in their first time playing against Young, who finished with 18 points, since trading the four-time All-Star to the Wizards in January.

CJ McCollum and Aaron Wiggins scored 15 points each to help Atlanta make up for All-Star forward Jalen Johnson missing his second straight game with a sprained left ankle.

Anthony Davis had 26 points and 10 rebounds for Washington.

Kyshawn George added 25 points for the Wizards, who trailed throughout the final three quarters.

KNICKS 135, BULLS 105

NEW YORK (AP) — Jalen Brunson scored 33 points as New York routed Chicago.

OG Anunoby added 18 points and Karl-Anthony Towns finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds as the Knicks won for the fourth time in five games following an 0-3 start to the season.

The Bulls have lost six straight.

This one was over early as the Knicks used an 8-0 run to erase a 6-4 deficit, and they never trailed again.

New York increased its lead to 43-21 after the first quarter with Brunson scoring 22 of those points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field, including going 4 for 5 from 3-point range.

The lopsided scoring continued in the second quarter as the Knicks outscored the Bulls 41-31, marking the first time New York had scored 40 or more points in each of the first two quarters of a game.

The 84-52 halftime score tied the Knicks’ record for their most points in an opening half, matching the mark they reached on Nov. 18, 1988, in a 137-135 loss at Philadelphia.

New York’s lead ballooned to a game-high 44 points, 111-67, on Miles McBride’s four-point play with 3:23 left in the third quarter.

The Bulls only got as close as 30 points the rest of the way.

CELTICS 109, BUCKS 102

BOSTON (AP) — Paul George scored 25 points and had five 3-pointers, Derrick White added 24 points and seven assists, and Boston beat Milwaukee.

Tyler Herro scored 18 of his 25 points during the third quarter for the Bucks, who fell to 1-7, including 0-4 on the road. Jaime Jaquez Jr. added 18 points.

Baylor Scheierman had nine points and 11 rebounds off the bench for the Celtics, who survived a scare after being pushed by one of the NBA’s weaker teams.

Boston never trailed through three quarters, opening a 22-point advantage in the second quarter, leading by 21 at halftime and eight entering the fourth. Milwaukee’s best stretch came during the third quarter, with a 26-12 run to make it a single-digit game.

When Ryan Rollins slammed home two of his 13 points, the Bucks trailed 91-89 with 8:17 remaining. George threw the ball away coming out of a timeout, with Milwaukee’s Nate Ament racing the other way for a layup that tied it at 91.

The Bucks took their first lead of the game at 92-91 when Ament hit a free throw. With leading scorer Jayson Tatum watching from the bench, and Payton Pritchard missing the final quarter with what the team called a right eye abrasion, the Celtics’ search for late-game offense was answered when White converted a hoop-and-harm sequence that put Boston up 102-97 with 2:22 left.

Boston outscored Milwaukee 12-5 over the final three minutes. The Celtics shot 41% from three (16 of 39) and improved to 5-0 at home.
