Former Newcastle United star anthony Gordon has reacted following Barcelona's team meeting

Anthony Gordon helped silence Barcelona’s doubters as the Catalan club demolished Alaves 6-1 in La Liga on Saturday. The former Newcastle United star got on the scoresheet as Hansi Flick’s side got back to winning ways.

The 25-year-old has quickly made an impact since completing his £69million switch from Newcastle in the summer. Gordon was pursued by Barcelona after scoring 10 in 12 Champions League games during his final year at St James’ Park.

The reigning La Liga champions made a perfect start to the new campaign, winning their first 11 matches in all competitions, before coming unstuck against Paris Saint-Germain and losing an El Clasico to Real Madrid last week. The two-game blip prompted the team to hold an emergency meeting to help halt their slide.

Gordon, who started both defeats to PSG and Real Madrid, dropped to the bench against Alaves this weekend. Despite being introduced with around 15 minutes to go, the winger still had time to make an impact as he scored the team’s final goal.

In the aftermath, the England international issued a telling message on social media. The caption of his Instagram post read: “Back on track. Big week ahead.”

Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo reported that Barcelona stars Raphinha and Rodri felt that a squad event was needed ahead of facing Alaves. A team meal was held to help strengthen their bond and appears to have had the desired effect as Flick’s side responded with a 6-1 win.

Gordon’s goal was his third in Barcelona colours, with the winger also supplying five assists in 13 games. Meanwhile, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal both got braces, with Fermin Lopez also scored to guide the club to victory.

As Gordon referenced on social media, the Catalan side are set for another challenging week. Barcelona are set to host Aston Villa in the Champions League on Tuesday followed by a tough away trip to Atletico Madrid next weekend, though Flick was impressed by what he saw from his side on Saturday,

“I am extremely satisfied,” the Barcelona boss said. “We dominated the first half and created chances by exploiting the spaces. I really liked what I saw. We played well.”

Looking ahead to next week, Flick added: “First, we have to face Aston Villa . We'll be playing at home, and the Champions League is always a special competition with a unique character.

“We only have two days to recover after today's match. Therefore, our focus is now entirely on the players' recovery, and then we'll begin preparing for the match against Aston Villa.”
