"Lost in defence" – Five Wallabies who FLOPPED against the All Blacks
imago1084622773h

Australia suffered a crushing 43-21 defeat to New Zealand in Sydney, with several Wallabies enduring afternoons to forget.

The All Blacks ran in seven tries to claim another emphatic Bledisloe Cup victory, leaving Les Kiss with plenty to think about.

While Declan Meredith impressed and Max Jorgensen caused problems with his pace, others struggled to make their mark.

From defensive mistakes to a frustrating milestone appearance, five players endured difficult afternoons against their Trans-Tasman rivals.

Here are five Wallabies who struggled against New Zealand.

1. Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii – 5/10

It was a nightmare afternoon for Suaalii, who struggled defensively after moving back to outside centre.

The former rugby league star showed glimpses of his attacking ability, carrying the ball regularly and looking to create opportunities.

However, his defensive problems were difficult to ignore.

By the 55th minute, Suaalii had missed more tackles than any other player on the field.

Planet Rugby handed him a brutal 3/10, highlighting his struggles in defence.

With Australia already struggling to contain the All Blacks, those defensive lapses proved costly.

2. Allan Alaalatoa – 5/10

Alaalatoa struggled to impose himself during a match that offered few opportunities to showcase his scrummaging ability.

The experienced tighthead prop has built his reputation as one of Australia's most reliable forwards.

However, with limited scrums during the opening 40 minutes, he was forced to make his impact elsewhere.

Although he worked hard defensively, Alaalatoa was unable to change the direction of the contest.

He was replaced by Massimo De Lutiis shortly before the 50-minute mark.

Planet Rugby awarded him just 4/10.

3. Ryan Lonergan – 6/10

Lonergan endured a frustrating afternoon despite showing some positive moments with the ball.

The Brumbies scrum-half looked to control proceedings with his kicking game, sending several contestable high balls into New Zealand territory.

However, the All Blacks repeatedly found ways through Australia's defence.

Wallace Sititi exposed Lonergan during one particularly damaging moment, beating the scrum-half on his way to the try line.

Planet Rugby awarded Lonergan just 4/10, pointing towards his defensive struggles.

It was a difficult outing for a player who had impressed during the opening stages of the Bledisloe Cup series.

4. Lukhan Salakaia-Loto – 5/10

It should have been a special occasion for Salakaia-Loto, who made his 50th appearance for Australia.

Instead, the experienced lock endured a frustrating afternoon.

He started brightly with several carries as Australia attacked inside New Zealand's 22, but his influence faded as the match progressed.

Salakaia-Loto finished with modest attacking and defensive numbers, while also losing a turnover and missing a tackle.

He was replaced by Carlo Tizzano early in the second half.

It was a disappointing way to mark a major international milestone.

5. Harry Potter – 5/10

Potter endured a quiet afternoon as Australia's attack largely focused on the opposite wing.

The winger struggled to get involved, with limited opportunities to run at New Zealand's defence.

He did manage a line break and produced one of Australia's few dominant tackles.

However, Potter also missed two tackles as the All Blacks repeatedly found ways through the Wallabies' defensive line.

Both RugbyPass and Planet Rugby awarded him 5/10.

It was a frustrating outing for a player who would have hoped to make a much bigger impact.
