5 Suns point guard trade targets amid apparent frustration over roster

The Phoenix Suns haven't been able to get into a consistent rhythm offensively this season. It largely stems from a lack of playmaking, as Phoenix starts a pair of shoot-first guards in Devin Booker and Jalen Green.

Apparently the roster construction is becoming annoying internally. NBA insider Chris Haynes reported Thursday the Suns are growing increasingly frustrated over their lack of a traditional point guard who can run the offense and set other players up.

Phoenix hasn't had a true point guard since Chris Paul earlier this decade. Paul and Booker thrived together, reaching the NBA Finals in 2021 before falling to Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks. Booker has taken more of the playmaking duties since, but it's proven to not be the best use of his skillset.

While Haynes reports the Suns are hoping to remedy the point guard issue internally before making any drastic changes, an answer on their current roster doesn't seem to exist. Therefore, here are five point guards the Suns could trade for if they're truly committed to getting their season back on track.

Kyrie Irving, Dallas Mavericks

Irving, 34, is still making an impact after a torn ACL wiped out his entire 2025-26 season. While he's not the most prolific passer, Irving is one of the NBA's most gifted ball-handlers and can at least take pressure off Booker in that department. As Cooper Flagg continues his ascent to superstardom, however, Dallas may opt to keep Irving and even make some win-now moves by the trade deadline.

The Spurs have one too many quality point guards, forcing coach Mitch Johnson into an awkward starting lineup where Fox, Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle share the floor. A Fox-for-Green swap would seemingly help both teams, as Phoenix gets its playmaker while San Antonio gets premium shot creation from a player whose age (24) better fits their timeline.

Dejounte Murray, New Orleans Pelicans

Murray has been outstanding in his first season back from a torn Achilles, especially defensively. He's still working out the kinks with his 3-point shot, but Phoenix would have enough quality shooting around Murray to make spacing a non-issue.

Dennis Schroder, Charlotte Hornets

Schroder has been thrust into some high leverage moments early this season with Coby White and Kon Knueppel out, and he's been an absolute gamer. He's a big reason why Charlotte won three of its first four games, to the point where Charles Lee and Co. may just want to hold onto him for depth. However, selling high would make sense for a Hornets team that's still building for the future.

Scoot Henderson, Portland Trail Blazers

Like San Antonio, the Trail Blazers came into this season with a point guard logjam, theirs led by Damian Lillard and Ja Morant. It's made Henderson, the former No. 3 overall pick, the odd man out. Perhaps a fresh start in Phoenix would do Henderson well, as he's currently averaging a career-low 19 minutes a game off Portland's bench.
