'I believe in it': Dave Rennie doubles down on All Blacks' World Cup plan

All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie has doubled down on his commitment to play high tempo attacking rugby at the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

After blitzing the Wallabies by a cumulative score of 93-40 over two weeks, the All Blacks intent is clear.

With both sides committing to play an expansive game in Sydney, it took until the 31st minute to pack down for the first scrum.

A record high ball-in-play time of 59 minutes eclipsed the previous record of 46 by 13 whole minutes, a contrasting approach to the RGR series with South Africa where the set piece battle proved to be integral.

Following the win over the Wallabies in Sydney, Rennie continued his commitment to playing this way at the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

“I do believe that. I mean, there’s no point playing this way and then going to a World Cup and trying to play risk-free footy,” Rennie said.

“So we’re well aware. You know, you can put yourself under pressure the way that we’re trying to play, but we also back ourselves to profit more than we’ll suffer in those situations.

“So, I don’t think you want all the teams in the world playing the same game. So I think if you look at the Wallabies, they’re pretty similar to us.

“I think they’ll want to play, and it’s a point of difference, part of the DNA of both sides.”

Rennie’s commitment is a bold, even the All Blacks history with World Cups shows that all-out attack rarely comes up with the title.

The All Blacks scored the only try of the 2023 Rugby World Cup final playing a man down, but ultimately came up short by 12-11 as South Africa scraped by on four penalty goals.

The All Blacks successive victories in 2011 and 2015 featured a balanced approach with the ability to grind out the game if needed. The famous 8-7 final in 2011 against France was low scoring, decided by a penalty goal, while 2015 featured a tight semi-final over the Springboks built on penalty goals and Dan Carter’s drop goal.

Carter famously used the drop goal again in the final against the Wallabies, a rarity for All Blacks sides.

The All Blacks coach backed his side to build on the foundation set in 2026 and improve their game by 2027.

“If you want to just get into arm wrestles and with a couple of the big sides in the world, you know, it’ll be a struggle,” he said.

“So, so we’re trying to grow our game, we’ve got a long way to go, but you know the brutality around carry-clean and tackle-hunt is a massive part of everyone’s game, I guess.

“We just want to be able to play at a tempo that will will test other sides.”

Rennie always knew he would be up against it to perfect his game with just three Tests before the South Africa series, but has been impressed with where the group is now following the tour and Bledisloe series.

They have had to go deep on the roster to cover for the injuries, but were still able to produce dominant wins over Australia.

“We predicted when we left South Africa, you know, we’d know a lot more about this group, that I’d have a better understanding of a game we’re trying to play and the skill set and conditioning required,” he said.

“It’s been fantastic. We’ve used 50 odd players this year, creating depth and creating competition for places. So, and that’s the great thing about this group too. That we’re missing a few influential players, but other guys all step up.”
