Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli has secured the 2026 World Drivers’ Championship following the Mexico City GP, becoming the youngest-ever world champion in Formula 1 history. The Silver Arrows’ Constructors battle with Ferrari also remains alive after a crucial Mexico City weekend.
Antonelli entered Round 19 of the 2026 season knowing a P9 finish was enough to secure him the Drivers’ title even if his teammate George Russell won the race, while a tenth place finish would suffice in the case of a win for pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton.
Starting from fourth, Antonelli’s P3 result got the job done in Mexico City, with Max Verstappen ultimately taking victory at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. The 20-year-old has now beaten former Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel’s age record - achieved at the Abu Dhabi GP in 2010 - by three years and 66 days.
Despite Antonelli’s historic Drivers’ title victory in Mexico City, it was not quite the perfect day for Mercedes, who had their first chance to secure the Constructors’ title at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
Mercedes came into the Mexico City GP weekend knowing they had to outscore main rivals Ferrari by 39 points by the end of Sunday’s race, with a P1 and P3 result the minimum required as well as a particularly poor outing for the Italian squad. The Silver Arrows have missed out on their first opportunity to win the teams’ title, with Russell finishing P6.
With the Scuderia strong all weekend at a high-altitude circuit that suits their SF-26, drivers Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have scored a handsome points haul - despite another tumultuous Grand Prix - to finish P2 and P4, respectively. However, Ferrari face an uphill battle as the Constructors’ fight continues next weekend in São Paulo.
