ORLANDO — UCF outlasted Florida Gulf Coast, barely, in its opening men's basketball encounter of 2026-27. The Knights figure to see a step up in competition Nov. 6 as one of the Ivy League's annual contenders comes to town.

UCF (1-0) hosts Yale (1-0) at 7 p.m. on ESPN+, the second meeting between the two programs. Yale won the previous matchup in 1989, a 93-81 final in New Haven, Connecticut.

Dior Johnson dominated in his return to the Knights after spending last season at Tarleton State. The redshirt senior guard scored 41 points, hitting 13 of 15 shots from the field with a perfect 4-for-4 showing behind the 3-point line.

Yale handled its opening assignment with a 72-62 triumph against Howard. Riley Fox led four players in double figures with 19 points, and the Bulldogs pulled down 22 offensive rebounds to offset 18 turnovers.

Here's a preview of Friday's game, including where to find the game on TV and predictions from UCF reporter Chris Boyle and News-Journal sports editor Chris Vinel.

UCF basketball scouting report

UCF's Arturo Dean (2) brings the ball up the court during the Knights' season opener against Florida Gulf Coast on Nov. 2, 2026, at Addition Financial Arena.

Johnson stole the show, particularly in the second half, but Arturo Dean added a strong showing off the bench in his UCF debut with 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. The Knights have a potentially deep backcourt with that duo, plus fifth-year senior Riley Kugel, Wofford transfer Cayden Vasko, Carmelo Pacheco and Charleston transfer Mister Dean. North Carolina A&T transfer Lewis Walker impressed as well, playing almost 34 minutes off the bench and scoring 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Rebounding was a strength for UCF last year, but it had a -10 margin against FGCU with starting power forward Elijah Malone hampered by foul trouble and center John Bol leaving the paint out of respect for Justin Houser's 3-point shooting ability.

Yale has dominated the Ivy League in recent years with an enduring formula of player development despite the current era of transfer-portal upheaval, narrowly missing a fourth March Madness berth in six years last season. However, the vultures finally started to circle New Haven this past offseason.

The Bulldogs lost star wing Isaac Celiscar, one of the most efficient offensive players in college basketball last season, to Baylor, rim-running center Samson Aletan crossed state lines to join Providence and do-it-all point forward Nick Townsend graduated after a decorated career at Yale, leaving coach James Jones with a sizable rebuilding job ahead of the 2026-27 season. Sharp-shooting point guard Trevor Mullin is the only returning starter on a roster that looks more like an average Ivy League squad than Jones' offensive juggernauts and NCAA Tournament giant killers of years past.

Jones orchestrates his Bulldogs at one of the slowest tempos in college basketball, a stylistic clash against the fairly fast-paced Knights, but the teams can find common ground as two of the cleaner offensive teams in the sport — both UCF and Yale ranked inside the top-25 nationally for turnover rate last season. Mullin and Fox combined to shoot just 3 of 12 from 3-point range Monday evening, so improved jump-shooting from Yale's backcourt will be key to springing the upset in Orlando.
