‘I’d love to play there’ – Arsenal’s Raya open to future LaLiga move
‘I’d love to play there’ – Arsenal’s Raya open to future LaLiga move

David Raya revealed he "would love" to play in LaLiga during his professional career, but the Arsenal goalkeeper insisted he was happy with the Premier League champions.

Raya, who joined Arsenal from Brentford in 2024 after spending the previous season on loan with the Gunners, has become a crucial part of Mikel Arteta's side since his arrival.

He has made 157 appearances across all competitions for Arsenal, keeping 74 clean sheets, at least 31 more than any other Premier League goalkeeper (Jordan Pickford – 43).

It's also 11 more shutouts than any other goalkeeper across Europe's top five leagues (Yann Sommer – 66) in that time, as well as winning three Premier League Golden Gloves.

The Spaniard has played his entire career in England, turning out for the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Southport, Brentford and now Arsenal.

But when asked about the possibility of returning to Spain, where he left in 2012 at the age of 16 to join Blackburn, Raya told Marca: "Yes, I would love to.

"I would love to try out LaLiga. For now, I'm very happy here [at Arsenal], but I would certainly like to experience the Spanish league.

"I think it's a very competitive league. Perhaps, in the future, I could play for a Spanish club. I'm Spanish, and I'd love to play there – that's for sure."

Raya has carried on his fine form in the Premier League this season, with only Brighton's Bart Verbruggen (five) keeping more clean sheets than the Arsenal shot-stopper's four.

The 31-year-old was crucial in ending Arsenal's wait for the top-flight title last season, while also helping them reach the final of the Champions League and EFL Cup.

He was also part of Luis de la Fuente's Spain side that lifted their second World Cup this summer, though Raya did not play a single minute, with Unai Simon preferred in net.

"I believe I've had a perfect year," Raya added. "Perhaps the only thing missing was playing in the World Cup.

"Every year since I arrived at Arsenal, I've continued to improve and hopefully that will keep happening.

"But I truly believe this year, by winning the Premier League and playing a decisive role in the league, the Champions League, and the Community Shield. It has been my best season as a professional, being impactful and lifting trophies."

Arsenal face Bayern Munich in a mouth-watering Champions League tie on Wednesday, and Raya has his eyes firmly set on adding more silverware to his trophy cabinet.

"I want to win it all," he said. "We want to establish ourselves as favourites, and that is our goal.

"Hopefully, this year we can improve upon last season by winning the Champions League, but there is still a long way to go before that happens."
