Bob Chesney sees room for improvement for his 8-0 UCLA Bruins

The UCLA Bruins might be 8-0 and have picked up a 27-0 shutout win over the Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday but first-year head coach Bob Chesney knows his team and he knows that they can perform better.

Nevada didn’t have the talent to compete with the Bruins but UCLA took advantage of that on just one side of the ball. While the UCLA defense played an A+ game, pitching the shutout, the offense was stagnant for most of the game.

When Chesney spoke postgame after the win, he kept it real and didn’t sugarcoat things, about both his offense and his home crowd.

“A lot to be desired at moments on the offensive side,” Chesney said. “Design-wise, I thought as far as what we did with our preparation, put us in position to do some things. We just didn’t connect. That’s all stuff we got to go back and watch and figure out and make sure that we really know the intent of the play.”

Not only was Chesney underwhelmed with the offense but also the home crowd at the Rose Bowl, with the Halloween crowd being a bit light for a drizzly day in Pasadena.

“The amount of improvement that has to go on here is significant. There’s no noise,” Chesney said. “The noise is us. In our own heads, in our locker room.”

Chesney hasn’t been afraid to call out the crowd in year one. He’s built a Top-10 program but the empty seats at the Rose Bowl are still plentiful. It’s been a dream start to Chesney’s tenure with the Bruins but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t things to tidy up.
