In a game that could have given the Kansas City Chiefs a significant early advantage in the AFC West, they suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Denver Broncos. Kansas City led 24-13 before collapsing in the fourth quarter, allowing 15 unanswered points in a 28-24 defeat.
But they had a chance to steal the win in the waning seconds, before a controversial false start penalty call gave them a major blow. It even led Brittany Mahomes, the wife of their superstar quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, to express her frustration online.
As the scoreboard read 28-24, a spectacular kick return from Emmett Johnson gave the Chiefs excellent field position on their final drive. Surgically cutting through the Broncos’ defense, they made it to the 4-yard line with nearly a minute remaining.
Unable to get the score on the first three downs, they eventually faced a 4th & 1 from the 1-yard line. Mahomes connected with Rashee Rice for the touchdown, but the play was called back for a false start on Jaylon Moore.
Facing a 4th & goal from the 6-yard line, they couldn’t convert as time expired, ending the game in defeat. But upon further review, fans were less than convinced about the call against Moore, with Brittany joining that brigade as well.
“You can’t tell me you call that on a game-winning TD,” she argued on her Instagram story. “Oh wait, yeah, I can cause it’s us. That was the weakest call I’ve ever seen, you can’t tell me otherwise.”
After a 20-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, the Chiefs were hoping to bounce back with a win that would have given them a two-game advantage in the loss column over Denver while securing the head-to-head tiebreaker.
But the penalty erased what would have capped a vintage performance from Mahomes until that point in that game. After one of the worst games of his career against Seattle, he put together a 321-yard, 3-touchdown performance on a night when Kenneth Walker III was largely a non-factor.
After the loss to the Broncos, Mahomes climbed to ninth on PFN’s Quarterback Impact Metric with a grade of 81.2, as his superstar running back only managed 69 yards on 21 carries, averaging less than 3.5 yards per carry.
The loss now puts the Chiefs into a tough position in the AFC and the division as well, as the Broncos remain in a battle with them for the top spot.
Now, Kansas City will turn its attention to the New York Jets in Week 9 to try to get back on track after consecutive losses.
