F1 driver was forced into retirement while on the toilet after bumping into boss

Christian Horner has revealed how David Coulthard learnt he was being sacked by Red Bull in the toilet. The British Formula 1 icon was winding down the end of his racing days when his old boss gave him the news while taking a whiz.

Former Red Bull team principal Horner, who was sacked in 2025 following a misconduct scandal, was still in the early stages of his tenure in Milton Keynes when he decided to let Coulthard go. However, he informed ex-team advisor Helmut Marko how he wanted the 13-time Grand Prix winner to lead the announcement himself.

That was where Marko came in and leaked the news to Coulthard during a shared trip to the bathroom. The Austrian disobeyed Horner's vow of secrecy and fed the update back to the departing Coulthard just as an emerging Sebastian Vettel prepared to begin his Red Bull reign.

An excerpt from Horner's news memoir, Drive, which is released on October 22, read: "There was a month to go until Silverstone, so I had little option but to mention the suggested plan to Helmut. Having told him the situation, I then stressed the importance of DC [Coulthard] making any announcement himself.

‘"This has to come from DC,' I said. ‘Please don’t breathe a word.’ The next morning before practice, DC went to the toilet and stood at a urinal next to Helmut.

"‘I hear you’re retiring at Silverstone then,' Helmut said, smiling. DC was stunned. 'How do you know that?' 'Because we’re taking Vettel next year,' said Helmut, bluntly."

Horner went on to recall how Coulthard immediately stormed to the garage in order to verify the speculation with him. And he could tell from Coulthard's demeanour that "something was wrong."

"‘I think I’ve just been retired in a toilet," he said, looking despondent. "I was annoyed. I’d wanted DC to know he was respected by everyone at Red Bull and that his departure was being handled with sensitivity. Typically, Helmut had come in like a wrecking ball and crushed a delicate process.

"'Look, David, this needs to be your choice,' I said. 'And it needs to be your announcement. But you can see how things are playing out with Sebastian.'"

Vettel was the next big thing in F1 at the time, having shown promise for several seasons at Red Bull's old sister brand, Toro Rosso. Horner continued to say Coulthard understood there was "little room for sentimentality" in F1, offering the British ace an ambassador role in an attempt to retain his insight.

In the end, it proved to be the right decision as Vettel finished second in his Red Bull debut year before winning four straight titles. Coulthard has since become a broadcasting success and is a Sky Sports regular, while Horner's 20-year Red Bull reign is no more as he awaits a potential return to F1.
