Kevin Owens was explicitly told to stay away from the WWE Performance Center ahead of CM Punk’s NXT Championship opportunity against Grayson Waller.
However, Shawn Michaels’ warning did little to keep the former WWE Universal Champion away. His eventual appearance had major consequences for the main event.
Earlier in the day, Michaels confronted Owens in the medical bay, where he was receiving treatment for his shoulders. HBK made it clear that he didn’t want Owens anywhere near the building because of his ongoing issues with Punk.
Michaels even told him that he could have returned “any other day of the week.” Nevertheless, the message apparently didn’t get through.
The confrontation came just days before Kevin Owens and Punk are scheduled to settle their differences in a No Holds Barred match on the November 6 episode of SmackDown. Their personal rivalry has continued to spill across WWE programming, and Owens found another way to get involved on NXT.
During the championship main event, CM Punk appeared to be gaining control against Waller. After trading offense throughout the contest, the challenger signalled for the GTS. He looked poised to make his move for the title.
That’s when Owens made his appearance. Despite Michaels’ orders, he reached the ringside area, forcing security to rush over and hold him back at the ring apron.
The distraction gave Waller the opening he needed. The champion quickly rolled Punk up for the three-count, successfully retaining the NXT Championship while Owens’ presence cost Punk a crucial opportunity.
The result added another chapter to the bitter rivalry between the two former friends, with Owens making it clear that Michaels’ instructions wouldn’t keep him out of Punk’s business.
With their No Holds Barred encounter coming up on SmackDown, the NXT interference has given their rivalry another talking point ahead of Friday’s showdown.
