Auston Trusty’s reaction after Benfica’s third goal told its own story during Celtic’s 4-1 defeat in Lisbon.
The goal came in the 36th minute, at a point when Celtic had just missed a huge chance to drag themselves back into the match.

Within minutes, Benfica had made it 3-0.
Gianluca Prestianni released Jhon Durán, who ran into the Celtic box with Trusty trying to recover.
The Celtic defender appeared to do enough to push the Benfica striker wide, narrowing the angle and leaving Viljami Sinisalo with the near post to cover.
Durán still got his shot away and squeezed it past the goalkeeper.
Trusty’s immediate reaction was one of clear frustration.
It looked like a natural response in the heat of the moment rather than anything calculated.
How did Jhon Durán find the back of the net from that angle?! 😲📐

Defenders are taught to force strikers away from goal in that situation, and Trusty seemed to feel he had done enough to make the finish difficult.
From there, he would have expected his goalkeeper to cover the near-post gap.
That is why the reaction stood out.
It was not a long confrontation or anything dramatic, but it was a small moment that showed how Celtic’s night was slipping away.
Sinisalo will know he should have done better.
Jhon Durán was in a tight area, Trusty had got across, and the shot still found a way through.
That kind of goal hurts a team.
Celtic had already given away an early penalty, then lost Alexander Bah at the back post for Benfica’s second.
The third came just after Celtic had hit the woodwork twice, which made it even more damaging.
Instead of going in at half-time with a foothold, Celtic were three down and chasing a game that had already moved away from them.
Trusty’s frustration was understandable in that moment.
It also showed how fine the margins can be in Europe when a defender thinks he has forced the attacker into the right area, only for the goalkeeper to be beaten anyway.
Celtic improved after the break, but the damage was done.
The third goal was the one that really killed the contest, and Trusty’s reaction summed up the anger inside a Celtic team that knew it had let another European night get away far too easily.
