Cheshire Phoenix beat Liverpool in thrilling showdown

The Liverpool side is in its first season in the Super League and after a promising start to the campaign, they welcomed Ben Thomas' Nix to the M&S Bank Arena.

Cheshire headed into the contest having gathered two wins from their opening six matches, but they managed to break a two-game losing sequence with a thrilling 117-108 triumph.

Phoenix were in the box seat at half-time with a 66-53 advantage, but while Liverpool chiselled away at their deficit, they were unable to overcome their local rivals.

Skyler White's free throw opened the scoring in the first quarter, with Cheshire reaching the first break holding a 34-28 advantage.

The visitors managed to build on this in the second period, with Isiah Gray and Jarrett Hensley combining to stretch their side's advantage.

Nix's 13-point lead was extended to 22 by the conclusion of the third quarter. Rory Stewart's score took the lead out to 20 points and Nazir Williams extended this with just four seconds of the period left to play.

There were 57 points scored in the final quarter, with Liverpool securing 35 of them.

Patrick Robinson, Tevin Olison and James Okonkwo were looking to spark the fightback, but Cheshire Phoenix had built up enough of a buffer to keep themselves ahead.

A magnificent seven Phoenix players reached double figures, spear-headed by 19 from Jaylen Searles.

Gray added 18 into the mix, with 15 going the way of captain White, while Ryker Cisarik and Hensley came away with 14 points. Added to this, Williams claimed 13 points on the night and 12 went the way of Sam Trunley.

For Liverpool, Robinson ended the night with a game-leading 31 points, backed up by 15 from the direction of Xavier Williams Jr.

This triumph moves Cheshire out of the bottom-two and they now find themselves in seventh place, one position ahead of Liverpool.

It's derby day once more on Friday for the Nix, with their short trip to tackle third-placed Manchester.

Then, on Sunday, Cheshire continue their spell of away days with their match-up against fifth-placed Sheffield Sharks.
