Plans extended stand, bar and TV gantry at Spalding United’s Sir Halley Stewart ground

A football club wants to expand its seating stand, add a TV gantry and install a new bar at its stadium.

An additional toilet block is also among the plans lodged by Spalding United in a bid to ‘enhance spectator facilities’ at the Sir Halley Stewart ground.

It would also help the club meet ground grading criteria following last season’s promotion, and have a stadium fit for any further elevation up the footballing pyramid.

The most eyecatching change would be to increase the seating capacity along the east stand by five times its current size, while also adding wheelchair accessible sections.

“The proposals form part of the ongoing investment in Spalding United Football Club and the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field,” a planning statement prepared by agent Field & Fox said.

“Crucially, the development is required to upgrade the ground’s infrastructure to meet the strict FA Ground Grading Criteria (National League System).

“These physical upgrades - specifically increasing covered spectator accommodation, dedicated broadcasting facilities, and sanitary provisions - are essential to support the club's sporting ambitions and ensure compliance for higher-league promotion.”

“It will enhance spectator accommodation and supporting facilities, provide covered accommodation for wheelchair users and incorporate a dedicated position for match filming and broadcasting.”

Last season Jimmy Dean’s side secured promotion to the National League North, English football’s sixth tier and the highest level the club have ever played at.

But not content with their two promotion is three seasons, United are currently among the teams battling for play-off places in the National League North.

However, the higher the level, the stricter the ground grading conditions a club are forced to adhere to.

United have had to install new terracing in recent seasons to avoid threats realistic threats of demotion.

This new proposal wants to extend the covered spectator accommodation on either side of the existing east stand, adding more seats, while the TV gantry will improve the club’s filming of its home matches - a requirement of all teams playing in the three National League divisions.

“The extensions are designed to match the existing seated stands, with corrugated roof and wall cladding supported by a structural frame,” the report continued.

“The stands at either end will provide covered accommodation for wheelchair users.

“A TV gantry will be incorporated into the east terrace extension to provide a dedicated position for filming or broadcasting matches.

“It forms an integral part of the proposed development and serves the activity taking place on the pitch.”

The bar would be fashioned from a shipping container already on site.

“The container will be adapted with customer serving hatches and internal prep/counter space to serve refreshments on matchdays.

“The facility will improve spectator amenities, reduce concourse congestion, and support the efficient operation of the venue during events.”

Meanwhile, the toilet block, along with other improvements, will ‘form a coordinated improvement to spectator comfort and the operation of the venue’.
