Martín and Fernández cleared for Sepang FP1 with injuries
Martín and Fernández cleared for Sepang FP1 with injuries

Aprilia’s Jorge Martín has been declared fit to take part in Free Practice 1 of the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang, following a medical evaluation by FIM MotoGP’s chief medical officer, Dr. Angel Charte. His status is ‘fit to review’: he will be closely monitored during FP1 and reassessed immediately afterwards to determine if he can continue racing over the weekend.

Martín’s wrist fracture

Martín’s injury is a recent, incomplete fracture at the base of the radius near his right wrist, a critical area for throttle control, front brake modulation and bike handling. Although not a full break, the injury still inflicts significant pain and presents a major challenge for the Spanish rider.

The fracture’s limited healing progress over just five days underscores the physical ordeal Martín faces on track. His presence at Sepang is a strategic decision driven by championship stakes, as Martín stands second in the standings, just 10 points behind leader Marc Márquez. The Aprilia rider’s commitment to compete despite the injury highlights the intensity of the title battle.

Fernández also fit to review

Trackhouse Racing’s Raúl Fernández has also passed the medical review to take part in FP1. Fernández sustained a double fracture in his right index finger after a crash at the Indonesian sprint race, caused by a collision with Marco Bezzecchi.

Despite the injury, Fernández finished second in the Mandalika race. However, the pain forced him to withdraw from the Australian sprint race, where he was deemed unfit for Sunday’s canceled main event.

Now in Sepang, Fernández’s status also remains ‘fit to review.’ After FP1, Dr. Charte will conduct another examination to decide if the rider can proceed with the rest of the Malaysian GP.

Aprilia confirmed, “Martín underwent a medical check today and was declared fit for FP1. After the session, he will be reassessed.” Trackhouse Racing added, “Raúl completed his evaluation and was cleared for FP1. His condition will be reviewed again post-session.”

Both riders face daunting physical hurdles in Sepang, where the demands on their injured right hands will test their limits. The medical team’s vigilant oversight ensures that safety remains paramount while allowing these championship contenders to fight on.

Martín’s determination to contest the Malaysian GP despite his painful wrist injury and Fernández’s resilience after a severe finger fracture encapsulate the relentless spirit defining this MotoGP season’s title battle.
