Wolves Loan Watch – €14.5m clause looking like a bargain as defender impresses everyone

If there’s one team who have done well with their loan deals in the last few years, it’s HSV Hamburg.

Last season it was Fabio Vieira shining on loan from Arsenal. This years, it’s Wolverhampton Wanderers defender David Møller Wolfe.

He joined the German club on loan from Wolves in the summer following Wolves’ relegation back to the Championship. That in itself, was something of an ordeal.

Sport Witness reported comments from his agent earlier this year about how it became something of a war with Wolves to sanction the move. But they eventually did.

He’s been a regular for HSV since, making six appearances in the Bundesliga and playing in 96% of the available minutes. He’s also featured in the DFB-Pokal.

Former president impressed

And his performances at left back are earning him praise. One of those who is particularly impressed is former HSV president Marcell Jansen. He’s a former full-back himself, and he’s very impressed by the loan signing.

“The dynamism HSV now has on both flanks is outstanding,” he said.

“(It’s) something that’s becoming increasingly important in modern football. The middle of the pitch is often congested and tightly packed, which makes winning one-on-one duels out on the wings all the more crucial.

“Møller Wolfe brings the necessary maturity and dynamism to HSV’s game. His physicality is impressive. 17-year-old Louis Lemke can learn a great deal from him—it’s a fantastic setup for Louis.”

Permanent deal?

The question now is whether HSV look to make the move a permanent one. They have an option to buy Wolfe permanently for buy Wolfe permanently for €14.5m in the loan deal.

And they’ve certainly signed loan players before now. Fabio Vieira was signed on a permanent basis from Arsenal this summer following his successful loan spell last season.

That deal, though, took some time to get done. HSV ignored the loan clause and instead waited until the final days of the window to get their man. It is likely that, with finances limited, they would do the same for the Wolves defender.

Wolfe would certainly be keen on it, though. Sport Witness already reported comments from him saying as much.

“It’s not up to me, but I would be very happy about it [staying after this season],” Wolfe explained.

“My girlfriend Kristin and I are currently discovering the many beautiful corners of this city, visiting lots of cafes and restaurants. We especially like everything around Isestraße in Eppendorf and the Winterhude district.”
