Arsenal rocked by blow which will impact Premier League meeting with Hull City

The Tigers head back to the capital on Saturday week

Mikel Arteta has plenty to consider after Tuesday night's embarrassing League Cup exit

Arsenal look set to be without teenage sensation Max Dowman when the champions host Hull City a week on Saturday, in the final outing before the last international break of the year.

Dowman was given a straight red card for violent conduct on Tuesday night as the Gunners suffered arguably the greatest EFL Cup shock of all time, losing on penalties to League Two strugglers Fleetwood Town after a 1-1 draw at Highbury.

The 16-year-old was given his marching orders by referee Michael Salisbury for lashing out at Harrison Neal, after being on the wrong end of a strong but fair challenge five minutes from time, meaning he's now facing a spell out.

“Premier League yellow cards are not carried over to the EFL Cup or FA Cup,” the Premier League says. “But when players receive a red card, they ARE carried over to - and from - the domestic cup competitions.”

Dowman, who was sent off recently for England's Under-19s against the USA, will miss Arsenal's next three games, starting with Sunday's huge game with Liverpool at Anfield. He'll then sit out the visit of Sergej Jakirovic's Tigers and then the trip to Newcastle United after the international window. The Gunners are thought to have lodged an appeal.

"We knew when we prepared the context of the match, we were very clear on the things to expect, the things that emotionally we have to dominate," a furious Mikel Arteta said, though he refused to go into detail about what he said to the youngster as he headed off the pitch: "It was something that we discussed before the game.

"First of all, congratulations to Fleetwood for going through to the next round in the manner they've done it," Arteta had earlier told Sky Sports.

"A really sad day for us. I cannot fault at all the attitude of the players, I haven't seen anybody not doing what is required at this level but we had so much of the ball, had so many chances, so many shots and if you want the margins to be bigger than going to penalties, you have to capitalise on that. We didn't and football is about that.

"It wasn't to do with attitude, otherwise I would be here fuming. I'm sad, we're all sad. We have a responsibility to represent this badge in the best possible way. It was nothing to do with effort, application or determination to go and win it, but we lacked other things to create much bigger margins.

"With what we produced, it should have showed in the scoreline. We knew when we prepared the context of the match, we were very clear on the things to expect, the things that emotionally we have to dominate."

Arsenal are also nursing concerns over Riccardo Calafiori, Noni Madueke and Declan Rice, with the trio missing the Carabao Cup humiliation. Bukayo Saka remains sidelined with concerns over the severity of his quad issue, while Christos Tzolis is also sidelined with a hamstring injury he picked up playing for Greece.
