Just when you thought — and hoped — Filip Chytil was finally healthy and ready to secure a significant role with the Vancouver Canucks, the former New York Rangers center sustained yet another injury this week.
The Canucks placed Chytil on injured reserve Friday after he re-aggravated a shoulder issue that sidelined him to begin the season. Chytil was hurt with roughly four minutes remaining in the Canucks’ 3-2 loss to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday. He was checked hard by Sharks defenseman Darnell Nurse, and was slow to get up, though he did finish the game.
Ironically, Chytil logged a season-high 22:13 TOI while playing 26 shifts against the Sharks. It was the third time in four games he played more than 20 minutes, something’s he’s done in five of seven games this season. To date, the 27-year-old is averaging a career-high 19:53 TOI, though he’s without a goal and has just two assists for the struggling Canucks, who, again, have the worst record (3-11-1) in the NHL.
Chytil missed their first eight games this season due to a shoulder injury sustained early in his preseason debut in September. In a bizarre and unfortunate sequence, a referee collided with Chytil, sending the Rangers’ 2017 first-round draft pick crashing into the boards.
Since the Rangers traded Chytil to the Canucks on Jan. 31, 2025 as part of the package to acquire J.T. Miller, the star-crossed forward sustained multiple injuries. He was unable to finish either of the past two seasons, with head injuries being the root of most of his issues.
Last season, Chytil played just 12 games with the Canucks, scoring three goals.
Of course, his injury woes extend back to his days with the Rangers. Most notably, he missed all but 10 regular-season games when the Rangers won the Presidents’ Trophy in 2023-24. His most healthy and productive season was the year prior, when he totaled 22 goals, 23 assists, and 45 points in 74 games with the Rangers.
