It's fair to say Ruben Amorim was anything but a success at Manchester United. The Portuguese coach lasted a total of 63 games before getting the sack.

In his debut season, the Red Devils finished 15th (their lowest-ever spot in the Premier League era) and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur. He then got sacked just months into his second campaign, leaving with a win percentage of 38 per cent, the worst of any permanent Old Trafford manager since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

On 16 June 2026, Amorim returned to coaching, taking up a role with AC Milan. Now nine games into his spell with the Serie A club, the Italian media have dropped a clear verdict on how the Premier League dud is getting on in Italy.

It's fair to say Amorim's 2026/27 has started a lot better than Michael Carrick's. While the current Man Utd boss has just one win in the Premier League, picking up seven points from seven games, with two losses thrown into the mix, things are going fairly well at AC Milan.

In contrast, the Italian giants are yet to lose in the league so far this term. Amorim's men have picked up more than double the number of points Man Utd have managed during their poor start to the 2026-27 season, with 15 to their name in total. Milan have four wins and three draws in Serie A, one of the best leagues in world football, taking them up to fourth after seven matches played.

In Europe, they've played twice, losing to Benfica before then thumping Red Bull Salzburg 4-0 in their second Europa League outing. While it's not been a perfect start, there are signs that things are starting to click for Amorim at his new club.

Milan are on a six-game winless run against Atalanta in the Italian top flight before Amorim's side took them on over the weekend and won 3-2. After the victory, the coach suggested his players are slowly getting to grips with his tactics.

"Of course, the result is the most important thing, but we also have to analyse the performance. I said against Sassuolo we were improving as a team, the final minutes don't change that, they just give us a clear idea that we have a lot of work to do."

Per BeinSports, the result also saw Amorim become only the third Milan manager in Serie A history to remain unbeaten in each of his first seven games in charge, after Hector Puricelli in 1955 and Luis Carniglia in 1963.

Italian Press React After AC Milan Beat Atalanta To Go Seven Games Unbeaten

After the latest win, the Italian press have made their feelings on the new Milan coach very clear. La Gazzetta dello Sport praised the 'spectacular' victory over Atalanta and claimed that things are perhaps starting to move in the right direction:

"The path is the right one, Amorim's Milan is starting to show and even looks good, but it's too early to say mission accomplished."

However, having led by three goals at one stage, there are concerns that his style of play is taking too much out of the players: "It's unfair to hide all the beauty of the opening act, but the suspicion is that Amorim's total-football style is consuming more energy than Milan can afford. New strategies will need to be devised to last the entire 90 minutes."

Adding to that, Quotidiano Sportivo said similar things, praising the 60 minutes of the match: "An hour of dominant football, the premise and summer promise of Ruben Amorim's new AC Milan era: Ramos, Rabiot, and Gila scored a 3-0 lead, with the center forward indulging in the excessive luxury of wasting a second penalty. An hour of almost open applause."

Referencing his unbeaten run, Gazeta Express said: "Ruben Amorim is making an impressive start to his tenure at AC Milan. The Portuguese coach has managed to remain unbeaten in his first seven Serie A matches, making history for the club."

Finally, Corriere della Sera stated that the attack is now starting to click under Amorim, stating: Seven goals scored in the span of three days—including the four put past Salzburg in the Europa League last Thursday—signal that the attack has finally found its rhythm.
