Seattle Seahawks backup quarterback Drew Lock has only played in two games this season, but the effect that he had on the team when he was in as the starter not only impacted the team greatly for the better, but also came unexpectedly.
Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox tabbed Lock as being the Seahawks’ biggest surprise this season and highlighted the quarterback’s unexpected emergence as questions grow surrounding starter Sam Darnold following the team’s Week 6 loss.
Lock has made the most of his opportunities, demonstrating accuracy, composure and an ability to protect the football. His performances have provided an encouraging storyline for Seattle, raising questions about the team’s quarterback depth and whether he may be in line to see additional playing time later in the year.
Statistically, Lock has completed 72.9% of his passes for 422 yards and four touchdowns without an interception across two appearances. He has also recorded 13 rushing yards and a 127.3 passer rating, giving the Seahawks a productive backup under center.
Meanwhile, Darnold has thrown for 1,033 yards and seven touchdowns while recording seven interceptions, producing a 77.4 passer rating through five games played. His struggles intensified against Denver, where his two interceptions contributed to Seattle’s 17-14 overtime loss.
Darnold’s costly mistakes have sparked frustration among Seahawks supporters as well as calls for Lock to see time as the starter. Darnold’s job is secure, but the reigning Super Bowl champion quarterback’s uncharacteristically high interceptions total and up-and-down play have highlighted all that Lock brought to the table earlier in the year, as well as his importance on the team as a reliable backup capable of delivering when needed.
