Michael Penix Jr. has worst outing of career in loss to Buccaneers

In his first game in his home state of Florida since high school, former Washington Huskies superstar quarterback Michael Penix Jr. had the worst outing of his NFL career.

As the Atlanta Falcons suffered a 16-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers while quarterback Baker Mayfield didn't complete a pass in the game, marking the first time a team hasn't completed a pass in a game since 1974, when the Buffalo Bills beat the New York Jets 16-12, Penix somehow had a worse day.

The rocket-armed left-hander, who was coming off NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors after leading an upset win over the then-undefeated San Francisco 49ers, struggled in a torrential downpour that muddied up the field and the signal caller's stat line.

Three of those interceptions came in the first half, which was when the rain was at its worst, as linebacker Alex Anzalone had two while Penix couldn't seem to get a grip on the ball. The former No. 8 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft finished just 8-for-24 for 125 yards, 76 of which came on a late completion to wide receiver Jahan Dotson, but it didn't shake his confidence moving forward.

"I ain't never thrown four picks in a game," Penix told the media after the game. "I'm gonna shake back, I promise you I will."

Penix will have a golden opportunity to bounce back in his next game, as the Falcons will travel to Madrid, Spain, next Sunday for a matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals, who gave up 304 yards and 2 touchdowns to Cam Ward and the Tennessee Titans in a 43-36 overtime win on Sunday.
