Westminster-Lafayette's versatile duo in trenches sparks Chargers' title run
Westminster-Lafayette duo
Michael Landry, left, and Dane Fontenot lead the Westminster-Lafayette effort in the trenches to help the Chargers get to an 8-0 to the season.

Dane Fontenot and Michael Landry's ability to move around to different positions has been a driving force behind Westminster Christian-Lafayettte's undefeated record.

Fontenot switched positions on both sides of the football, sliding down to tight end from offensive tackle for the Chargers (8-0, 5-0 District 7-1A), who travel to Jeanerette (6-1, 4-1) on Friday.

"I honestly loved it," Fontenot said. "I kind of play a little of everything. It's not much difference ... we don't catch many passes in this offense. The main goal is to block."

With Fontenot at one tackle position and Landry at the other, the Chargers have rushed for close to 3,000 yards with 50 touchdowns and are averaging 11.7 yards per carry.

"We're having a record-breaking season," Landry said. "Everybody is stepping up and playing their role."

On defense, Chargers coach Kent Gable moved Fontenot inside to tackle from end, while Landry shifted from tackle to end.

"They've been anchors for us for three years," Gable said of the senior duo. "They were probably starters before I got here. They're both extremely tough and play extremely hard. They don't come off the field, except for special teams. I'm lucky to have those two."

Fontenot and Landry didn't play in the second half of five blowout wins. Fontenot has 27 tackles, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery, while Landry has 35 tackles, five tackles for loss and 11 quarterback hurries.

"Both of them are doing a really good job defensively," Gable said. "We like to move Dane around to keep defenses guessing. With his personality and the way he plays the game, inside is usually the better fit."

The Chargers will try to slow down a Jeanerette team that is averaging 50.5 points over its last four games and features several college prospects, including sophomore All-American offensive lineman Blair Lewis (6-foot-6, 320 lbs.).

"We've never gotten off the bus and been the bigger team," said Fontenot, who is listed at 5-foot-11 1/2, 212 lbs. "That's not what we do, right? We're going to play our game and see who wins in the fourth quarter."

WCA sophomore Pierce Gable ranks second among area rushers with 1,261 yards on 102 carries with 22 touchdowns. Junior quarterback Zade Prejean has rushed for 813 yards on 46 carries with 13 scores and has completed 18 of 28 passes for 425 yards and four TDs with no interceptions.

"The line is the key to everything," coach Gable said. "If you're going to have a really good veer team, it's because the guys up front are having good years."

Landry (6-foot-0, 235) said the Chargers will be prepared to offset a size advantage against the Tigers, who are led by first team all-state lineman Gregory Green (6-2, 300, Sr.).

"We can't back down," he said.

Gable echoed the comments of his two senior linemen.

"We're never going to win 'the get off the bus award,'" he said. "We're never going be the biggest team, but our kids play extremely hard for 48 minutes. That's the key to what we do."

Jeanerette's only loss was a one-point setback (31-30) to Ascension Episcopal, which WCA-Lafayette defeated 27-26 in Week 6.

"Routine," Fontenot said when asked about his team's success. "We do the same thing every week. We don't plan any differently for a certain game. We plan for every game like it's the Superdome because that's the goal at the end of the year."
