The reigning Formula 1 world champions are putting five cars up for auction after they were simply ‘sitting in storage’
McLaren are set to auction off five Formula 1 cars, including models driven by former world champions Lewis Hamilton, Ayrton Senna and reigning champ Lando Norris.
The five cars could raise tens of millions of pounds, with asking prices per model expected to be between £5m and £10m. They will be sold through Tom Hartley Jnr.
Among the models are the last McLaren driven by Lewis Hamilton in 2012, the MP4/27A, as well as two models of the MP4/6A cars tested by Senna in 1991 and driven by Gerhard Berger.
Two recent models driven by Norris, the 2021 MCL35M and 2023 MCL60, will also be sold to the highest bidder.
“We have decided to part with these iconic McLaren Formula One cars because we feel that having them simply sitting in storage is a disservice to what they represent,” said McLaren F1 CEO Zak Brown.
“These cars were built to be driven and raced, and we want to see them being used and enjoyed. We believe that is the best way to keep our history alive and our heritage business active.”
For comparison, Hamilton’s 2010 McLaren car, the MP4-25A, was sold for £4.8mollion in 2021 while Michael Schumacher’s championship-winning 2001 Ferrari car was sold for £5.6m in 2017.
The 2023 McLaren car was also driven by Brad Pitt in Austin as he learned to drive an F1 car in connection with his leading role in the 2025 film, F1.
Hartley, who previously sold Bernie Ecclestone’s collection of cars, added: “It is incredibly rare for a collector to have the opportunity to acquire race-driven grand prix cars directly from the manufacturer and team that built and campaigned them, and that makes this a very special offering.
“These five cars will be offered individually and there is no time pressure whatsoever. Our priority, and McLaren’s, is to find the right homes for them.”
