Trent Alexander-Arnold has been linked with a shock return to Liverpool of late, and now journalist Pete O’Rourke has given the latest on the situation.
The right-back exited his boyhood club for Real Madrid last year, in a decision that didn’t go down well with plenty of supporters, despite his goodbye message that said:
“After 20 years at Liverpool Football Club, now is the time for me to confirm that I will be leaving at the end of the season. This is easily the hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life. I know many of you have wondered why or been frustrated that I haven’t spoken about this yet, but it was always my intention to keep my full focus on the team’s best interests, which was securing No.20.
“This club has been my whole life – my whole world – for 20 years. From the Academy right through until now, the support and love I have felt from everyone inside and outside of the club will stay with me forever. I will forever be in debt to you all.”
But Alexander-Arnold’s time at Madrid hasn’t been a success to date, with various managers finding it hard to pick him, from Xabi Alonso to Jose Mourinho.
A shock return to Liverpool has been mooted, but speaking to Football Insider, O’Rourke has played down the rumour, saying the 28-year-old still wants to make things work in Spain:
“There’ll always be speculation over his situation, but I don’t think Trent has given up on his Real Madrid dream just yet. He’s under a long-term contract until 2031.
“I don’t think Real are actively pushing him out the door either right now. So yeah, look, I think the player is ready and waiting for his chance and ready to prove himself.”
Alexander-Arnold’s world-class ability on the ball is obvious, with few full-backs of his generation able to dictate matches and see passes in the manner that he can.
Unfortunately, though, his career has gone backwards, and Liverpool shouldn’t look to bring him back, with his defensive work too often leaving a lot to be desired in terms of effort.
Alexander-Arnold is also now 28 years of age and has become more injury-prone, so the Reds signing a slightly ageing player on huge wages could end up backfiring for them.
There is also a chunk of Liverpool’s fanbase who don’t want him back simply for leaving the club in the first place, at a time when he looked primed to be the next captain after Virgil van Dijk.
All in all, it doesn’t make sense.
