"How on earth?" - Fans react as Wales leave out multiple stars from Nations Championship squad

Wales have announced a 39-player squad for their Nations Championship campaign, but several notable omissions have left supporters questioning some of the selection decisions.

After playing three away fixtures against Fiji, Argentina and South Africa in July, Wales will return to action this November with three consecutive home matches at the Principality Stadium.

Japan, New Zealand and Australia will provide the opposition across rounds four to six.

New Gloucester signing Dewi Lake has been named captain for the campaign.

Liam Belcher, Tomas Francis, Archie Griffin, Louie Hennessey and Dafydd Jenkins all return after missing the opening three rounds of the Nations Championship.

Taine Basham, Seb Davies and Rio Dyer have also been recalled to a squad with an average age of 27.

Head coach Steve Tandy welcomed the returning players and highlighted the form of several others who have earned their places.

Tandy said: "It's great to welcome back the players who were unavalable for the first three rounds of the Nations Championship.

"Added to that, there are a number of players who've been in great form for their clubs and so we wanted to give them an opportunity in the squad this autumn.

“We’re excited to head into our three home rounds of the competition. Principality Stadium is a special place to play and means an awful lot to the players.

"When we assemble as a group next week all eyes will be on that first home fixture against Japan and preparing well to put in a good performance for the fans.”

However, the squad announcement has already sparked debate among Welsh rugby supporters, with several in-form players surprisingly left out.

Scarlets centre Macs Page is one of the most notable omissions. RUCK has previously reported that the former Wales U21 international has received an offer to join Munster.

The 21-year-old is also qualified to represent Ireland, making him an attractive option for the province.

A potential move could open the door to greater international opportunities if he chose to switch allegiance from Wales.

His omission from the squad could strengthen the appeal of pursuing opportunities elsewhere, particularly given his impressive start to the season. Page has scored four tries in four appearances for the Scarlets so far.

Leicester Tigers back-row duo Tommy Reffell and Olly Cracknell have also missed out, despite both enjoying strong starts to the campaign.

Their absences have raised further questions among supporters, with several fans arguing that their recent performances deserved recognition.

One user said, "Macs Page should be in. Elliot Dee top try scorer in the URC. Tommy Reffell and Olly Cracknell have been the best back rowers in the PREM this season so far."

Another supporter also questioned the decision to leave Page out, saying, "Yeah on this occasion , I have to question Josh Adams over Macs Page…"

The most-liked reply to the squad announcement at the time of writing echoed those concerns, reading, "Macs Page???? Reffell? Cracknell?? I’m sorry, how on earth can Adams get selected when he has hardly played? And Page has been lighting up every game he played in so far this season?????"
