Tottenham Hotspur head coach Roberto De Zerbi has offered a definitive explanation of his tactical philosophy regarding final-third efficiency, declaring that the solution to overcoming poor finishing is to overwhelm opposition defenses through overwhelming chance volume. Speaking in comments reported by Football London, the Italian manager addressed questions about how he can assist his squad in becoming more clinical in front of goal during a challenging domestic run.
Rather than focusing purely on individual finishing drills or player instincts, De Zerbi views the problem through a structural lens. The manager explained that if creating eight or nine clear opportunities yields only a single goal, his primary responsibility as a coach is to adjust the system so that the team routinely generates twenty, twenty-five, or even thirty chances per match.
Tottenham’s early-season performances under De Zerbi have often seen the team dominate possession and build promising passages of play, only for the final shot or decisive pass to fall short. By targeting a massive increase in total opportunities created, De Zerbi aims to remove the statistical pressure placed on any individual chance, ensuring that goals inevitably follow through sheer offensive repetition.
“I think if we didn’t score, or if we scored just one goal, creating eight or nine chances, my work is to improve the team to create 20 chances to score. And if they are not enough, 25 to 30. I think we have not other ways. I have big confidence in the players.”
Despite the squad sitting near the foot of the Premier League table and facing mounting external pressure, De Zerbi remains firmly committed to his attacking and defensive principles. The Italian tactician stressed that consistency in execution across all phases of the pitch is the only viable path to turning good performances into sustained winning runs.
“I think if we follow in playing in this way, if we follow to attack, if we follow to defend in this way, and if we follow to creating so many chances to score, we will score many goals and we will win many games. But it’s my opinion.”
As Tottenham prepare for their upcoming fixture against Coventry City, De Zerbi’s unshakeable belief in his methods provides a clear directive for the squad. By committing fully to aggressive chance creation and trusting the system, the North London side seeks to break their winless streak and kickstart their domestic campaign with a decisive victory.
