Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has revealed how he feels about Klay Thompson signing with the Miami Heat this offseason.

Two years ago Klay Thompson left the Golden State Warriors to sign with the Dallas Mavericks, branching out on his own after years of success in the Bay. Thompson was one half of the Warriors ‘Splash Brothers’ along with Stephen Curry – with the pair leading the team to win four NBA titles.

Thompson’s spell with the Mavericks was disappointing, undercut by the team trading Luka Doncic away.

This offseason as a free agent he decided to sign with the Miami Heat, where he will be playing a supporting role to Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Speaking to the Stephen A. Smith show, Stephen Curry said he believes Thompson and the Heat have a real chance to contend for the title, and he voiced his happiness for his former teammate.

Curry said: “I’m happy for him in Miami. I know it’s, he wants to be in a situation where he can be impactful, have a championship-contending kind of energy going into the season. That’s, I think, what they have.

“So, for him, he deserves an opportunity to play and impact a winning team.”

Are the Heat going over/under 46.5 wins, and why?

Curry voices Klay regret

Stephen Curry would far rather that Klay Thompson was still playing with the Golden State Warriors, who have their own challenges heading into the season.

But he insists that Thompson’s achievements together with him will never be forgotten.

Curry said: “I wish it was still with us, but that’s part of the nature of how things evolve in the league, and nobody’s going to hold that cloud over any of our heads, because what we accomplished was so great that we’ll talk about it forever.”

Thompson’s spell in Golden State had an additional element to Curry’s heroics; he had to overcome serious injury suffered in the 2019 NBA Finals.

Now 36, Thompson still has a lot to prove to his new team. He could be a real asset to the Heat if he can come close to recapturing the heights of his career.

Last season he started only eight out of 69 games he played for the Mavericks, averaging a career low 11.7 points per game. A fresh start is exactly what he needs.
