Celtic Fans Have Every Right to Be Furious — And Dermot Desmond Knows Exactly Why
Celtic Fans Have Every Right to Be Furious — And Dermot Desmond Knows Exactly Why

As Celtic prepare to face Benfica in Lisbon, Dermot Desmond faces uncomfortable questions about recruitment, European failure and the club’s £66.4m cash balance.

Tonight, Celtic return to Lisbon, the city where this football club achieved immortality in 1967.

But almost 60 years after Jock Stein’s Lisbon Lions conquered Europe, we find ourselves asking a question that should make everyone inside the Celtic boardroom profoundly uncomfortable.

How has a club with Celtic’s history, resources and support been reduced to approaching European fixtures with more apprehension than expectation?

And why does Dermot Desmond continue to escape meaningful accountability for it?

£66 Million in the Bank — But Where Is the Ambition?

Let’s deal with the figures.

Celtic’s latest annual accounts revealed £66.4 million in cash at the end of June 2026.

Yet this is the same club that surrendered a four-goal aggregate advantage against LASK Linz and crashed out of Champions League qualification.

That collapse was humiliating.

And the financial consequences of missing Europe’s premier competition are enormous.

Yes, Celtic spent heavily during the summer. Nobody should pretend otherwise.

But spending money and building a properly balanced, competitive European squad are two entirely different things.

Why was the squad still so vulnerable when it mattered most?

Why does Celtic repeatedly find itself discussing what might have been rather than celebrating European progress?

Dermot Desmond Cannot Keep Escaping Scrutiny

The anger among Celtic supporters did not appear overnight.

It has been building through recruitment frustrations, European disappointments and an increasingly poisonous relationship between the board and sections of the support.

Yet when supporters demand answers, the conversation too often turns towards their behaviour rather than the decisions that created the frustration.

I do not defend intimidation or threatening conduct.

But legitimate criticism of Celtic’s leadership must not be dismissed because some protests have crossed the line.

Desmond is an enormously influential figure at Celtic.

With that influence comes responsibility.

And when European ambitions repeatedly fall short, supporters are entitled to question his leadership.

Martin O’Neill Deserves Better

Martin O’Neill has been handed another difficult European assignment.

Benfica defeated AC Milan in their opening Europa League fixture. Celtic, meanwhile, lost at home to Ferencvaros.

Nobody should underestimate the challenge awaiting Celtic tonight.

But I refuse to accept that Celtic should simply be grateful to participate at this level.

O’Neill delivered a UEFA Cup final in 2003. He understands what European ambition should look like.

He cannot manufacture squad depth or undo years of recruitment mistakes through determination alone.

Those responsibilities ultimately extend far beyond the dugout.

Celtic Supporters Deserve Answers

Celtic supporters have invested their money, loyalty and emotions in this football club for generations.

They are not demanding that Celtic win the Champions League.

They are demanding leadership worthy of the club’s potential.

And there is a fundamental difference.

Tonight’s result will not, by itself, determine whether Celtic’s board has succeeded or failed.

But it will provide another measure of where this club stands.

Dermot Desmond cannot expect Celtic supporters to celebrate healthy bank balances while watching their European ambitions continually slip away.

The supporters deserve ambition.

They deserve accountability.

And above all, they deserve a Celtic board that understands the difference between financial security and genuine footballing progress.
