Ian Poulter said he'd love to be apart of the Ryder Cup(Image: Getty Images)
Although Ian Poulter has announced his departure from LIV Golf and voiced his desire to return to the Ryder Cup, his prospects of doing so remain slim.
His departure comes amid LIV Golf's uncertain future after the league filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Sept. 8. Poulter isn't the only one to leave the circuit, as he followed in Jon Rahm’s footsteps and was joined by Sergio Garcia, Tyrrell Hatton and many others.
The DP World Tour also announced that no LIV Golfer will be allowed to tee off in any of their events come 2027. They had previously granted conditional status in tournaments.
Earlier this year, Poulter expressed his desire to participate in the Ryder Cup in any role. While his exit from LIV Golf might seem to open doors, his path remains blocked.
A long-standing rule reportedly prevents figures such as Poulter, Garcia, Lee Westwood, and Graeme McDowell from serving as captains or vice-captains for team Europe, and there are no expected plans to alter this regulation to accommodate these returning players.
In January 2017, well before the emergence of LIV Golf, the DP World Tour instituted a key rule specifying that any player who turns down European Tour membership or fails to meet their yearly minimum event requirement is ineligible to serve as a European Ryder Cup captain or vice-captain.

“Players cannot be a European Ryder Cup captain or a vice-captain if they decline membership of the European Tour or fail to fulfill their minimum event obligation in any season,” the rulebook states.
After joining the breakaway league, European Ryder Cup stalwarts who were enticed by LIV Golf all surrendered their tour memberships for at least one season. A sports arbitration panel upheld the fines and suspensions levied against them in 2023 for competing in conflicting LIV tournaments, leading several players to make this choice.
As Luke Donald considers his remaining assistant appointments for Adare Manor in 2027, he will not be able to select from the returning players. Donald notably assumed the role of European captain only after the previous skipper, Henrik Stenson, defected to LIV.
“I’d obviously still love to have some involvement in the Ryder Cup in some way, shape, or form,” Poulter told TNT Sports at LIV Golf Riyadh in February 2026.
“From a perspective of wanting to have a helping hand in something I’ve been quite a big part of over the last two decades, yeah, it would be a dream come true if we could be in that position.
“It’s worked that way for Jon [Rahm] and Tyrrell [Hatton], and they’ve still accepted those guys in with the Ryder Cup and, hopefully, that relationship can continue.”
