Handing MS Dhoni the leadership of the India National Cricket Team was a massive decision taken by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The decision proved to be on point as the legendary keeper-batter guided the team to win several ICC titles, including the ODI World Cup and the maiden T20 World Cup title.

Dhoni was very young when the board handed him the leadership role, despite having multiple experienced players in the side. In a recent conversation, former Team India spinner Harbhajan Singh claimed that none of the senior players had any issue with Dhoni with the captaincy.

Harbhajan Singh explains how MS Dhoni took Team India forward

Speaking on Prakhar Gupta's YouTube channel, Harbhajan stated that after becoming the captain, MS Dhoni did not try to change what the former captain Sourav Ganguly had left behind. Under the leadership of Ganguly, a bunch of cricketers, including Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, and Harbhajan himself, made their names in international cricket.

So when Dhoni joined the team as the leader, there were multiple cricketers who played under Sourav. The senior cricketers gradually announced their retirements, and the team went into a transition phase. There were speculations that the senior cricketers might have had issues with the young captain. Harbhajan Singh denied any rift with Dhoni.

"Dhoni took the team forward from where Ganguly left it because he never tried to impose his leadership style. Dhoni only focused on how to get the best out of the players, which he was exceptional at. We never had an issue with Dhoni becoming the captain despite being so young. Because we understood the captain wasn't everything, and all 11 players had to do well for Dhoni to look good as captain," Harbhajan stated in the YouTube video.

"Dhoni was young when he took over as captain. But he already had players who were established, having played under Ganguly. Dhoni's best quality is that he never imposed himself on the individuals by telling them what to do. He knew that many of us had played for several years and were aware of what needed to be done in different situations," he added.

MS Dhoni could have become a great poker player: Harbhajan Singh

The former spinner praised the calm mindset of Dhoni, which helped the team to win multiple trophies in the next few years. Under the leadership of Dhoni, the Men in Blue claimed major trophies like the T20 World Cup in 2007, ODI World Cup in 2011, and Champions Trophy in 2013.

"Dhoni's biggest strength was his calmness at all times. He was quiet on and off the field. You can't guess anything looking at his face. He could have become a great poker player. He was an amazing captain," said Harbhajan Singh.

Harbhajan Singh heaps praise on MS Dhoni's wicketkeeping skills

Furthermore, the former spinner, Harbhajan, praised MS Dhoni's wicketkeeping skills as well. According to Harbhajan Singh, there is hardly any keeper who could match Dhoni's lightning-fast hands.

"His wicket-keeping skills were unmatched. I don't think there is a better wicketkeeper than him. He was faster than lightning," he continued.
