Former FA Cup winners Leicester City and Wigan Athletic discovered their opponents for the first round
The draw for the first round of the FA Cup has been completed with the four non-league teams who have reached this stage of the competition for the very first time discovering their opponents.
Northern Premier League Divison One side AFC Rushden & Diamonds made history with a 2-1 victory over Morecambe at the weekend and are now set for a trip to League One’s Burton Albion. Burton are 10th in the third division and will be huge favourites to progress to the next round.
Plymouth Parkway, who currently play in the Southern League Premier Division South will take on another non-league club in Berkhamsted. Coincidentally, both clubs play in the same league with Parkway second in the table and Berkhamsted 11th.
The fourth club to reach this stage for the first time is Sholing who defeated South East Dons in the fourth qualifying round. They were drawn against fellow non-league side Salisbury and have a great chance of making into the next round of the competition.
Elsewhere, former FA Cup winners Leicester City, who won the cup in 2021 will travel to National League’s Oxford City while 2013 winners Wigan Athletic face a trip to Boreham Wood.
Other intriguing match-ups pit father and son against one another as the Robbie Savage-managed Peterborough United will play Reading. Robbie’s son Charlie plays for The Royals and is likely to feature when the teams clash at London Road.
The highest ranked team in the competition at this stage is Bradford City, who currently sit top of League One. They will host the National League’s Marine. There are other eyebrow raising fixtures such as Oldham Athletic vs Sheffield Wednesday, Accrington Stanley vs Wycombe Wanderers and Oxford United vs Stevenage.
There are still replays to be done to determine the final fixture list for the first round but once those results are known the 40 FA Cup first-round matches will be held across the weekend of 7-8 of November, with the second-round draw presumed to take place on the evening of Monday 9 November.
