Johnnie Jackson content with point after AFC Wimbledon draw with Wycombe

The home side took the lead after 29 minutes when Jayden Stockley headed in after James Tilley’s cross struck a post.

But the visitors equalised in the 60th minute after Jayden Wareham kept the ball in play before teeing up Fred Onyedinma.

A point achieved in very wet conditions means AFC Wimbledon avoided a fourth straight league defeat, though they are now without a win in six matches, while the Chairboys made it two draws in a row.

Jackson felt a point was fair but was happy with improvements after heavy defeats to Sheffield Wednesday and Mansfield.

He said: “It’s probably a fair result. I think they had some moments, we had some moments, tough conditions. I thought it was a miles better performance and obviously that was important for us on the back of two difficult results.

“It’s disappointing not to win as we got in front and I’m a bit disappointed with the goal they scored, but the response from my team was good, so I’m happy with that.

“I thought it was really important we didn’t lose on the back of two tough results. We have to respect the opposition as well – they’re not going to come here and make it easy, and they’re going to look at us and feel like we could be there to be got at because of the two results. But they could see we were bang up for it. It wasn’t enough to get three but we were well worth a point.”

Head coach Tom Hounsell was content to see his Wycombe side pick up a point.

He said: “It was difficult out there for the players but, generally, we tried to dominate first-contact moments and second balls and still have the composure to play.

“On the large part, I was pretty pleased but just disappointed we didn’t really capitalise when we made quite a few chances in the first half and conceded a sloppy goal which we should’ve defended better.

“It was a bit of a sucker punch in terms of their goal and I thought for the rest of the game, bar some moments when they were pretty direct, we managed the game well.

“Credit to the players for showing momentum to get back into the game and I thought we probably had enough to try and win it in the end.

“We know this is a difficult place to come to. I think they’d lost just once here all season, so I’m just pleased we wrestled back momentum and came away with a point.”
