Arsenal have January plans bubbling away in the background, but a much more pressing job awaits them at Anfield.

Three points at Liverpool would deliver their 300th Premier League away win, a mark only Man United have reached, and it would also break a run that has tormented travelling Gunners for 14 years.

13 league visits have passed since Arsenal last won at Anfield in September 2012, and five have ended level and eight have brought defeats.

A 1-1 draw and 5-3 shootout defeat at a League Two ground was a horrible way to wave goodbye to the Carabao Cup.

Arteta put both Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyökeres in his starting lineup, with Martin Ødegaard introduced after the break. That was a big chunk of attacking firepower to take to Highbury, and still Arsenal could not finish the job.

Gyokeres got their goal, but wasted chances left the door open for Fleetwood.

The champions cannot afford that same carelessness in front of goal this weekend, yet their league campaign paints a far more encouraging picture.

Seven wins from eight matches, including last weekend's 2–0 win against Everton, give Arteta something worth defending.

Arsenal have every reason to arrive with ambition, and a win would stretch their lead over Liverpool to nine points whilst making a sizeable statement after Tuesday's embarrassment.

Five league clean sheets offer encouragement, especially with William Saliba still sidelined. Arsenal have found ways to protect their goal, but Liverpool will test whether that organisation survives an afternoon under sustained pressure against an increasingly dangerous attack.

Selection out wide could still cause a headache.

Bukayo Saka remains unavailable, Max Dowman starts his suspension and Noni Madueke has been waiting on a late fitness test.

Declan Rice, Riccardo Calafiori and Christos Tzolis have all returned to training, offering Arteta some welcome encouragement, but the Gunners will need whoever starts to be far sharper in the final third.

Arsenal could yet turn to Real Madrid for attacking help, although the terms of any deal for Endrick may prove awkward.

TEAMtalk's Graeme Bailey reports that the Gunners have kept in touch with the Brazilian's camp while his representatives look at possible January moves.

Arsenal would consider borrowing him, but want an option to buy included, while Real would prefer a loan that ensures he returns to Madrid.

That difference matters, and a successful spell would be much more valuable to Arsenal if they already had a route to keeping him.

Bailey says AC Milan and Roma would accept a temporary deal without a purchase option, potentially making them easier clubs for Real to negotiate with.

Endrick, 20, is weighing up his future after a frustrating shortage of minutes, although José Mourinho wants him to stay.

The Gunners were among the clubs he rejected in the summer as he chased a breakthrough in Spain, with his representatives now considering alternatives.

Arsenal are seeking additions on the left and through the middle, with Bailey suggesting Endrick could help in both areas.

Landing him would give Arteta another attacking option, but first, Arsenal need a deal that suits their own ambitions without asking Madrid to surrender a player they still rate highly.
